Anyone open for a station critique?

I am the honcho for WUSM, Roots Radio 88.5. We are owned by the Univ. of Southern Mississippi, and certainly non-comm. We are staffed by students outside of management, me.

We call what we do "Roots Radio," and use AAA/Americana as a loose base. The concept is the music springs from popular music that was developed here: Blues, Jazz, Country, Rock n Roll. One of our liners is "from Son House to Son Volt" to give you an idea.

I will start by acknowledging and embracing the eclecticism, but I wonder if we are presenting something interesting or just junk - by wanting to acknowledge a lot of great music, are we so eclectic as to be distasteful?

I would appreciate and listen to all comments.

The website is southernmissradio.com ; we stream there, and our "archive" list the past 1000 songs played, stamped with the date/time. If you click on the link labelled "request a song" you can search our library of 6000+ songs. If you request a song, they play every hour during the "Roots Radio Jukebox."

Thanks,
Justin Martin

Justin:

I like it. Also kudos to keeping your site design clean and easy to use. The playlist looked great, and I'll definitely be listening. The only things that really stood out as unusual are the Smash Mouth and harder Foo Fighters tracks. I'm just not sure how that plays with the rest of the format/mix but other than that, looks pretty solid to me. Stay eclectic, it's what people are looking for from independent and public stations.

I've been listening to the station for a bit through my Ipod Touch. Very user friendly even on that device. Love the mix of music, and the request feature on the website is a very nice touch. I will be saving the site to my home screen so I can listen to this during the day at work. I'm really enjoying the station.

Quite a few of my friends from high school are USM grads and live in that area, so that makes the station even more special for me to listen to. Keep up the good work, and I'll be listening!

Justin?,
The station sounds great. Are you guys hiring over there?

Only if you are a USM student on a practicum. :) All student operated save for programming/traffic.

And thanks for the compliment.
