Anyone remember Burt and Kurt?

I have fond memories of the old Burt and Kurt show (I used to listen to them when they were in Tampa) and was happy to find them recently, streaming live on the internet. They are in Birmingham AL, on 2 shows. The first is a familiar format to me, Oldies but now with a twist. My old favorites, Red Wood and The Senator are there along with Uncle Mac, Elvis, Gomer, and other Kurt characters....brings back good memories and it is great to laugh along with them again and hear that good "old" music. They are on from 6 AM to 9 AM Eastern Time on Legends 1260.

Their other show is a Talk Radio program on WYDE 101.1 which I really enjoy also. I'd pretty much given up on radio until I found these guys again. On 9 AM to 11 AM Eastern Time.

Why Yes Sir , I remember Burt & Kurt . It all started at 62 / WJDX Jackson, Mississippi in the mid 1970's . Bob Burton was Operations Manager for 62/JDX and ask Kurt Kilpatrick to be a guest on his morning show there . The rest as they say is history . Great characters were then brought to life such as : Red Wood of Pelahatchie , Dr . Billy , The Senator , and Jayree of Yazoo City .....those were the days !!!!!!!

Burt & Kurt were one of the best morning teams ever! They were hilarious, and they did it without being dirty. Too bad there aren't more like them.

As the guy whose shift followed Skinny Johnny there at JDX,I can attest to the fear of that little red light coming on the hotline phone, for fear it was Bob listening at any time of the night. Once, he called to tell me I was sounding good that night. I of course asked him,"you're going to bed, now, though, right????" With apologies to Tanner & Reilly and crew, Burt & Kurt were the biggest thing that Jackson's ever had in the morning,in my opinion. It was an honor to sit in the chair.

I had no idea Burt & Kurt came out of Jackson. I remember listening to them on the way to school in the mornings on "Oldies 106.9" in Birmingham, thinking they were just Birmingham legends. Then they showed back up on "Legends 1260" for a while, then did a talk show on "The Source" and now they're doing both shows.

Every day I learn something interesting here on Radio-Info.

Just to give you a little history about Bob Burton. He was PD at WSGN in Birmingham in the early 70's. He also programmed WIST in Charlotte in the 70's, before coming to JDX. The Burt and Kurt show consistently pulled around a 24 share 12+ back in those days. I believe they left JDX to go to WLCY in Tampa and then on to Birmingham.

WOW, WLCY? A friend of mine worked there in the early 60s and was one of the jocks that broadcatser from the roof of a local McDonalds.

"The Great 138" as i recall one of their names was..

I was raised on Burt and kurt on JDX when I was a kid. When they left JDX was never the same. I remember Bob Rall did mornings for several years after. A friend back in college had an LP of some of their funniest bits. remember the one where they were lampooning Gov. Cliff Finch's "working mans friend" campaign and combining Evil Kenevil's notorious Snake River Canyon jump, by have Red Wood jump over the Pearl River on a bull dozer? Hearing it on the radio sounded like an actual live broadcast. Plus, the The Senator, Gomer Pyle, Jayree clower, Rev Billy and others were on hand to witness the event. If I remember correctly it took place next to the old swinging bridge in byrum. As a 12 year old it was one of the most insane things I ever heard on the radio. I would love to have a copy of that bit if it still exists. BTY, I don't think I remember if he actually made the jump, I was getting ready for school bus at the time and I think I missed it. Doe's anyone know? Funny stuff. great memories

oh, i remember them well. i vaguely remember the great pearl river jump show you're talking but do not remember if the jump was made or not ;). I remember their last morning and the parade of all the characters saying there goodbyes.

I was saddened and felt like life long old friends were departing. we were very lucky back in those days to have several good radio personalties in Jackson and Burt and Kurt were certainly at the top of the list.

If I'm not mistaken, Kurt may have done some local radio advertisments here in Jackson recently, posssibly as redwood? anybody know for sure or is it my imagination?

Little known fact (unless he talked about it and I missed it), prior to radio, Bob was a church music minister. He gave me mulitple incredible breaks, and under his tutelage I learned valuable life lessons, several the hard way.

When I was there in the mid to late 70's, JDX did only 1 remote. That was at the Jackson Zoo to raise money to buy an orangatang. We had a tremendous crowd and actually raised enough to buy 2. We called it "JDX Zoo Day". We all were there in the JDX Dunking Booth!

Ah, the dunking booth at Zoo Day. An experience not to forget. Really fun when the Jackson Mets(local minor league baseball team at the time) players came up to dunk us. Over and over and over....Long day. Zoo Day became a pretty big deal for awhile.

The names of the orangatangs were "Red" and "Fern" Wood, named after the burt and kurt characters. The two orangatangs were at the zoo for many years after that. There was a sign on their pen that had their names and it also mentioned that they were bought by JDX. I'm not sure if the original Orangatangs are still their or not, since I'm not sure how long they live. I believe the Orangatangs were young when they got them around 1976 or so, but they would be quite old if they were still living.

Having had my memory somewhat restored... the voices on the Pearl River Jump were Bob Burton, myself, Dennis Jon Bailey, and mostly Kurt Kilpatrick. I don't imagine I produced it, but Dennis Jon Bailey and I would sort of "pool" our production and crank it out as a team. We also did bits which ran on his show at night. Dennis did lots of phone bit stuff, and not long after leaving JDX he was at WRKO, Boston, working with Harry Nelson.
