Anyone remember Rick Shaw - KFRC - K101??

I am looking for some Historical / Biographical information on Rick Shaw.

A friend of mine is writing a historical book about Spruce Pine, NC where in 1960 - 62, a young man named Hugh Silvis was working at WTOE while in High School.

We are trying to find out if Rick Shaw, whose real name was Hugh Silvis, is the same Hugh Silvis from Spruce Pine. If so then he would probably be the most successful personality / DJ that came out of WTOE.

5 years later I started my own radio career there while in the 8th grade, but with much less success.

We would be appreciative of any information anyone could provide, stories, contacts even photos.

Post here or contact me through the board, my email is accessible through the board.

I don't know anything about Rick Shaw's early years, but I do remember that between KFRC and K-101, he was on 99.7 KYUU - a popular CHR station in the 1980s.

"Rick Shaw" is one of those DJ names like "Mark Elliot" and "_____W. Morgan," that were used by different DJs in different markets. 440 Satisfaction lists 3:

http://www.440int.com/440sat.html

For "Rick Shaw" San Francisco - the first credit is for KIMN Denver in 1966 where this Rick worked as "Mike Morgan."

There's a short tribute to Rick Shaw on the KYUU memorial website, which is hosted by Jeff McNeal - another alum of KYUU. He may be able to give you some additional information about Rick - Jeff provides an email address on the KYUU site's home page.

Also, BossRadio DJ of the Bay Area Radio Museum may check in with additional info

http://www.bayarearadio.org/

I googled "Mike Morgan KIMN" and (naturally) found a tribute website. If you scroll down the page, you'll see photos of many of their DJs and other staff over the years. "Mike Morgan's" picture can be found on the left side about 20 photos down.

It seems to be the same uh - toothy grin as the photo of the older Rick Shaw on the KYUU site.

Do you have any photos of Hugh from Spruce Pine to match it to? this would have been 66 - only 4 years later.

Rick Shaw from here was Hugh Silvis. He was a great guy (in more ways than one...about 6'5" as I recall) and a great talent. The original posting party has been directed to a friend of Rick's for more info.

Our Rick Shaw/Hugh Silvis (sometimes listed incorrectly as Hugh Silvas) was Charlie Knox at WKLO/Louisville in the mid-190s, then went to KIMN/Denver and KILT/Houston as Rick Shaw. There was another notable Rick Shaw (Jim Hummel) who was Rick/Hugh's contemporary.

(Don't forget to check out the comments that accompany that exhibit.)

His obituaries from the San Francisco Chronicle are at:

I put the clipping of Hugh from 1961 beside the Mike Morgan photo and got a screen shot of it:

Sure looks to me like it has to be the same person, but I am no expert.

A poster on the San Diego board dug up some information from the Social Security Death records and geneaology database that seems to indicate wew are on the right trail.

Hello, and thanks to all who have been working to give us information on Rick Shaw (Hugh Silvis) of K101 in San Francisco.

From everything that has been posted, I'm quite sure he is the guy that long ago started his radio career in high school at WTOE radio in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. WTOE is a 5 Kw AM station at 1470 on the dial, and was the first radio service in its region, signing on the air in 1955. Hugh was there in the 1959-1960-1961 range. He graduated Harris High School in Spruce Pine in 1962 but I have no information as to if he went to college. In high school, he was very active in clubs and sports, and was voted most talented in his class.

I'm in need of two things right now...a high quality photo of Hugh (preferably while he was in San Francisco) and a station list of as many places as we can identify that he worked. I have all the information up to graduation. The photo must be at least 5 x 7 and 300 dpi. I'm planning on putting a tribute to him in a book I am preparing for Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series about Spruce Pine. I'm very interested in this from both the book angle and because I worked as news and program director of WTOE in the mid 1980s and early 1990s.

Thank you again for any help you can give us on this project!

There is yet another Rick Shaw in the Palm Springs market who is the PD of KEZN 103.1. I think this one was at KEZY in Orange County a number of years ago.

Anyone know what happened to the Rick Shaw from Miami?

Check the link, radioman. http://www.440int.com/440sat.html

According to 440 Satisfaction, Hummel retired in November 2006, and they provide a link to a news story entitled "Longest Running Radio Personality Calls It Quits" Hummel had been on the air for 50 years at the time of his retirement.

Thanks very much!

...remember Rick Shaw? --jtudor

Boy do I remember Rick Shaw; would've responded earlier, but wasn't around
this spot in the web since late last month. He took my timeslot when I left KFRC for
KHJ in the early 70s, then welcomed me back to the Bay Area in the early 80s when I
returned. He was my friend and neighbor, lived about two blocks away, an easy walk.

The Rick Shaw (Hugh Silvis) I knew was, aside from being a journeyman
broadcaster, educator, miniature model creator (who isn't, with Lucas'
Skywalker ranch just down the road) and loving father, one of the few in our
business who remained real throughout his show biz life.

He just watched and smiled in his quiet style as the rest of us preened and
pranced our egos across the span of our careers, having none of that. He
never used his radio name in the community, preferring to be treated as
everyone else, never trying to get to the head of the line. Look up "nice
guy" in Merriam Webster and there should be his illustration.

Years ago, very early in one darkened morning the phone woke my wife and
I to hear the sobbing voice of Hugh's wife, Judy, who, in shock and grief, had
been awake all night. Hugh had passed away just a matter of hours earlier
when a tiny artery in his brain ruptured. I raced up the block to offer what
comfort I could.

Even now, tucked into dusty boxes within the depths of my garage, are several
textbooks and tapes of this great broadcaster. Also, warmly tucked in happy
places of my heart, are multitudes smiling memories of BBQs, picnics, holiday
dinners and joyful times spent with this great friend and his family.

Also worked with him. Never met Miami's Rick Shaw personally, but worked
alongside him as the station Image Voice where he was legend and from which
he recently retired. He will still occasionally show up at WMXJ-FM's
occasional extravagant oldies concerts and Miami remembers him well. (After
a year with another host who had a hard time filling those sneakers, WMXJ
now has old Majic teammate/production whiz Joe Johnson with Donna successfully
pulling off mornings. And I'm still there, too!)

I certainly remember Hugh Silva/Rick from our days at KFRC and KYUU.

Salt of the Earth, and very down to earth as well. Osh is spot on: Never a star trip with him. Much like Dr. Don in that way.

When I first moved to the Bay Area in 1976 he was kind enough to give me a tour of Marin County real estate. Waaay too expensive. I mean they wanted $60-150,000 for some of those homes!

Hugh was also an accomplished pilot. I remember flying with him to Santa Barbara on night while he was working on his IFR ratiing. We had another pilot with us to keep watch as Rick piloted wearing the blinders - except the takeoff and landing. Came right down the glide path before he took off the headgear.

If you need a picture of him (...and me, and Dolly Parton) I'd be happy to scan it and send it to you. BTW, he was at least 6'7".

Tom - I'm sure "jtudor" (who started this thread) would love that picture. It might be something BossRadioDJ would also want for the BARM website.

RE: Marin County real estate in the 1970s - I actually had the opportunity to buy the Marin County house I was living in with my girlfriend and some roomates - when my landlord decided to sell it in 1975. 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bath - 3,000 sq ft. in a rustic Fairfax canyon next to a creek. But he wanted $79,000 for it! I thought that was outrageous...

Big Tom -- I tried emailing you directly, but that address doesn't work. (UNLESS, of course, you started getting slammed with messages and decided to kill that address...)
