Anyone remember Rick Shaw -- KFRC- K101?

I am looking for some Historical / Biographical information on Rick Shaw.

A friend of mine is writing a historical book about Spruce Pine, NC where in 1960 - 62, a young man named Hugh Silvis was working at WTOE while in High School.

We are trying to find out if Rick Shaw, whose real name was Hugh Silvis, is the same Hugh Silvis from Spruce Pine. If so then he would probably be the most successful personality / DJ that came out of WTOE.

5 years later I started my own radio career there while in the 8th grade, but with much less success.

We would be appreciative of any information anyone could provide, stories, contacts even photos.

Post here or contact me through the board, my email is accessible through the board.

Rick Shaw's obituary from from June 23, 1998 says he was born in Riverside, but makes no mention of North Caroline. However the Social Security death records show that he got his Social Security card in North Carolina:

Social Security Death Index
about Hugh W. Silvis
Name: Hugh W. Silvis
SSN: 244-66-5559
Born: 24 Jul 1944
Died: 22 Jun 1998
State (Year) SSN issued: North Carolina (1959)

According to geneaological records, his birth name was Hugh Woodrow Benson, Jr. but his mother later married a guy named Silvis, who adopted Hugh. Hugh's stepdad was still living in Spruce Pine in the late 90's, but appears to have moved to Port Richey FL in the early 2000's.

Hello, and thanks to all who have been working to give us information on Rick Shaw (Hugh Silvis) of K101 in San Francisco.

From everything that has been posted, I'm quite sure he is the guy that long ago started his radio career in high school at WTOE radio in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. WTOE is a 5 Kw AM station at 1470 on the dial, and was the first radio service in its region, signing on the air in 1955. Hugh was there in the 1959-1960-1961 range. He graduated Harris High School in Spruce Pine in 1962 but I have no information as to if he went to college. In high school, he was very active in clubs and sports, and was voted most talented in his class.

I'm in need of two things right now...a high quality photo of Hugh (preferably while he was in San Francisco) and a station list of as many places as we can identify that he worked. I have all the information up to graduation. The photo must be at least 5 x 7 and 300 dpi. I'm planning on putting a tribute to him in a book I am preparing for Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series about Spruce Pine. I'm very interested in this from both the book angle and because I worked as news and program director of WTOE in the mid 1980s and early 1990s.

Thank you again for any help you can give us on this project!

It looks like his birth father Hugh Woodward Benson was killed in WWII in 1945 in the Philippines.

Although KIOI was Rick Shaw's last station, he spent much more time at KYUU between KFRC and KIOI.

I shot several video airchecks of Rick that are available through California Aircheck.com. One is from KYUU from 1987 (Video #10) and the other is from KIOI from 1995 (Video #56).

KIOI was still in the original Jim Gabbert building when that video was shot there. As I recall, it wasn't that long after that that he passed away. He was still the same friendly/modest guy that he was back in 1987 at KYUU...He had originally told me that I ought to be shooting Jeff McNeil in the afternoon because Jeff was really heavy on the personality and that he (Rick) didn't do much in the midday shift. Nothing could have been further from the truth...Rick did a lot of personality in his own way at KYUU (and KIOI)..

Because we have fried our brains less than the people in SFO and this have better recollections of the past.

I have met many jocks that made the west coast tour of San Diego, LA, San Fran and then back to San Diego. Last week: Bobby Ocean!
