Anyone remember WCRV - Washington?

I used to work there back in 1973-ish. Nick DiRienzo owned the place, as well as WFMV in Blairstown. Gather up your memories!

I do remember WRCV Philadelphia. Owned by NBC, it was akin to it's manufacturing plant across the river in Camden, NJ RCA Victor. Now KYW.

There used to be reunions of the alumni from several northwest NJ stations - WCRV, WFMV, WRAN, WRNJ, etc. Having worked at WRNJ, I attended a couple of these. The last one that I recall had to be at least four or five years ago (unless I missed one along the way), but at one time these were happening on a semi-regular basis. IIRC, they were usually organized by Patti Reiger (someone please correct me if my memory has failed me). These gatherings usually had a decent turnout, and there were lots of memories to go around.

Do any other posters here know what I am referring to, and if any such gatherings will be planned in the future?

For further details on WCRV (latterly WSRR) go to www.njrm.org and click on the good ol' Zenith radio dial at 1580. This will take you to Pirate Jim's website with a complete rundown and history of WCRV.

Radio reunions are a great idea, and those of us at NJ Radio Museum in Dover have been hoping to get one of these up and running for years.

Good luck on getting further WCRV details!

Rock On,

Rich Phoenix, RMC
NJRM President

I knew Carol Hill, a DJ in the 50s when CRV was in the bank building in Washington,
She left the station for a job as Weather Girl at the newly-created WGLV, Channel 57. owned by the Easton Express. Later in New York she was an instructor at Announcer Training Studios and Brooklyn College. Carol died in 2005 at 76.

Well I was there for a year or so starting early in 1975. Nick owned the place and it was really a nice little radio station! Nick was a very nice man-just a bad business man. It's main problems were a terrible signal and dial position. I kind of miss local radio now although at the time I hated reading local lost and found's and those "safety spot" campaigns!

Hey Frank -

Yeah, I remember those shindigs. Went to one or two after I left WNNJ, along with Frank Truatt. You and I chatted for a while there once, mostly about Shadow and 'KXW goings-ons.

Yup, it was indeed Patty who arrainged them. What a gal! No idea if there are more planned for the future however. Haven't heard about any in almost a decade....

WCRV did pretty well in the 60's and mid 70's. Unfortunately, a lot of manufacturing moved elsewhere leaving a lot of blue collar workers being forced to either move with the companies or do something else. At one time they were the "farm team" for WEEX....guys like Rod Wolfe & Jay Edwards worked there at one time. They were also co-owned with WFMV in BlairstownI think in regards to sales...that when WRNJ signed on in '76 WCRV had a hard time competing in the eastern part of Warren County. They went through a lot of different formats...including a bizarre mix created by owner George Vajda.

They left the air around November of 1987 and WRNJ managed to make some great inroads in lining up former WSRR advertisers to move their business to AM 1000.

Some folks you might remember...'Wild' Bill Scurrato...Debbie V.

here's some folks who left 1580 to work @ WRNJ....Ed Gorham, Chuck Rieger...and let's not forget...Jeff Grant (son of Bob Grant)

I remember driving up Rt. 31 and seeing the air person sitting in that little studio in the open field (a landmark on trips along the western NJ border just like Hot Dog Johnny!). They had the country format when the only other local country station was the even weaker signal of WHOL.

Right John! You'd hear trucks going by on-air when the mic. was open! On a good day, you could get us well across the hiway-at Zachies! We'd love to watch his teenage daughters scamper around in their bikinis at the pool they had right across 31! HOT DOG JOHNNY'S! but I STILL HATE BIRCH BEER!
