It's sort of a tricky thing...

A) It is too cost prohibitive to have one or two "Boston" or "D.C." channels on top of the Traffic/weather channels

B) Congress signed something into law against this, though I'm not sure exactly what.

C) Not enough listeners currently to make it viable.

If localization ever exists, it will probably be in 5-10 years.

I think that's part of it. The only way DirecTV and Dish Network get to do local programming is that it's "Local Into Local." Stations already originating in that market being delivered to that market.

They will always have a leach type connection to commercial broadcasting, they have to in order to survive. Bubba the Love sponge is on the air in Florida, David lee Roth is talking with Howard on Sirius and Howard is going on Letterman. They have to attach to what is local and mainstream right now.
When satellite becomes the norm,. the Feds will get right in the game.
Sirius is about to close out the week, below $4.00 for the first time in a year and a half...and that's after the Stern Injection.
Another medium, for a premium ...Step right up Ladies and gentlemen!

It won't be long before the money turns the heads of Local and National revenue to join hands with satellite! Remember the days of UHF/VHF...Cable(?) That won't get off the ground, and here we are with another medium. The FCC will most certainly take a hand in this, popularity breeds control.

NEXT!

I say they should start in right away. What if they started doing live programming from the Best Sirius Radio player sales office in Buffalo? Hire the best morning talent from that market (say brother wease?) and let him pipe in from a studio in Rochester. Sirius wouldnt have to align with the terra stations. Just start hiring the talent. Heck, Madden is going to cable right? Radio has always been very local, start putting some studios in the towns? Hmmmmm.

To support it they probably need to sell local advertising. In fact they should stop charging subsriber fees (why should you pay for channels you will never listen too?). I think if you ran about 10 to 12 units of advertsing an hour and provided the local service for free to the listsner you could make money, and deliver a good product.
