Anything good on TV?

These days you get about 1,000 TV channels from Satellite and Cable, compare to 25-30 years ago, only about 5 TV stations in most major market. Are there any programs that are worthwhile watching? So far, I so sick and tired of trash tv, and nothing else is on. It is so bad, that the only channel is worth watching is PBS, and the premium channels like HBO, SHOWTIME, CINEMAX etc. Other channels like MTV, VH-1, TLC, Spike, TV Land...etc, are all trash. Who wants to watch

Here's Comes Honey Boo Boo
16 and Pregnant
Jerry Springer
Any spin-off from the Kardashians
2 and 1/2 Men
The Real Housewives....
Survivor
Swamp People
Chelsey lately
The Bachelor/The Bachelorette
Toddlers and Tiara's
etc.

My must see TV list includes

Monday:
Bones
Hawaii 5-O

Tuesday:
NCIS (&LA)

Wednesday:
South Park

Thursday:
Big Bang, 2 1/2, P&R

Friday:
Fringe

Along with Superjail, ATHF, AD, and the late-night monologues (Conan then Jay then Jimmy then Craig).

Just my pics, YPMV (your picks may varry) ;D

You're absolutely right, Dawg, and that manifest of mediocrity you posted could be a poster child for the reason I now surf the cable news channels almost exclusively.

Some of the shows ajc just listed are cleverly written, and I do enjoy watching a few of them as well, like Bones, South Park and Leno.

Personal note to ajc: Sorry, I can't hold my nose long enough to watch Big Bang Theory.

Good programming is still to be had, but you need to look a bit harder for it. Obviously, this is all a matter of personal taste, but if you enjoy shows on HBO, Showtime, etc. then I'd strongly consider some of the original programming on FX, and AMC. Both put out fantastic stories (Walking Dead, Breaking Bad for AMC, Louie, Always Sunny, and others on FX).

There are other good shows out there of course, even in reality shows (Dirty Jobs was pretty good IMO) but it almost seems like you HAVE to have a DVR to be able to navigate it all (since some of the good shows may not be on during primetime).

I've actually been surprised this year, as it seems like NONE of the new shows are actually any good, save for maybe Revolution. So far, every new sitcom I've watched has been crap, and none of the new drama's have caught my eye either. I haven't sampled anything new in cable yet, just network programming, but it seems like they really phoned it in this year...

Call me disconnected, but news I heard this morning that Ashton Kutcher is TV's highest paid personality is grounds for one of my favorite catchphrases: I rest my case.

The quality, if not the ratings, of Two-And-A-Half Men has tanked since the departure of Sheen. Kutcher brings nothing to the show, save for the viewership of some life-direction challenged youngsters.

I was astonished that Kutcher got that much money for his pathetic performances. I actually quit watching "2 1/2" in season 7 when all the bru-ha-ha began with Sheen. It was clear he was phoning it in at that point although the rest of the cast were still good. Cryer IMHO, has always carried the show and it had a great supporting cast as well. With the change of leading man the cast was *ahem* cast aside and the show went right into the crapper. Apparently there are still a sizable number of pimple-faced peckerheads that can't get enough of crummy Fox shows and spill over onto CBS. I still watch the first six season which are in syndication and am constantly amazed at how good they were.

That said, here are some comments on my miniscule OTA viewing (no cable, sat):

NCAA football - the only reason I still have a TV.

Big Bang Theory - yes, I know it hasn't been very good so far this season but I'm trying to hold out thinking the writers will get their groove back and get rid of these constant boy-girl relationship threads. It was much more fun when everyone, but Penny, was a geek. I also watch the BBT episodes in syndication.

Survivor - yes, I know it is repetitive and sometimes excruciatingly bad but somehow I can't rid myself of that peeking-through-the-fence thrill. I have to admit I am usually doing something else while "watching" and tend to ignore the contestants personal diatribes. It's been fun picking out the next person to be thrown under the bus.

Revenge - I am not a soap fan at all so why did this show appeal to me last year? Perhaps the cast and the mysteries you had to really think about. I've stayed with it this season although there are now more holes in the story than a warehouse full of Swiss cheese. It is rapidly falling out of favor and will be gone in several more weeks unless it gets to be more drama and less soap.

Last Resort - I list this one only because I had such high expectations and it thoroughly disappointed me. Judging by its falling ratings I am not alone. I no longer watch it mostly because of its incredibly bad acting, exceedingly implausible story line and poor portrayal of the U.S. Navy (yes, I am a former naval person). For a drama to be this far-fetched is inexcusable and I made it only half-way through the first episode before having major problems with it. These were continued in the next two episodes so I bailed.

NHL Hockey - not currently being televised due to the lockout but I would be watching otherwise.

All my other watching is done over the 'Net. Documentaries, classic shows of all kinds, news and analysis etc.

Me here in Connecticut:

Family Guy (only when it's on FOX itself as a first-run episode, not in syndication or TBS)
Conan (but that's trying on some nights)
WWE Main Event (the only ION show I even bother with)
I will also occasionally check on the NFL with CBS, FOX and NBC, depending on who's playing.

As for The Big Bang Theory, I think the show is overexposed. I don't hate it, though. In fact, I've actually watched the first two first-run episodes aired on CBS this season. Also, it helps that Kaley Cuoco is a total hottie! :D

P.S. It turns out that Mayim Byalik of The Big Bang Theory was at my old high school two days ago, since a student there won some kind of essay contest. She taught a science and math class. Also, she was part of a $50,000 donation of equipment for the school (computers, etc.).

Steve Guttenberg, one of celebrity's few truly nice people, graduated from my alma mater, Plainedge High School on Long Island. I wish he would land another TV role. Him I'd watch.

These are the best shows on TV in my opinion (in no particular order):

Homeland
Boardwalk Empire
Person of Interest
Breaking Bad
SVU
Parenthood
Blue Bloods
Major Crimes
Big Bang Theory
Chicago Fire (new this year)

Still wondering why Big Bang appeals to so many viewers. Guess I'm just getting old.

BBT's last numbers were 18-49 demo rating of 4.5 and 14.23 million viewers.

14 and a quarter million people out of a total population of 311 million isn't breathtaking unless you consider how fragmented TV viewing has become over the past two decades.

So yes, you may be getting old however there may be another reason the show doesn't appeal to you. Either you are not into geekology or you find human relationships boring. Understandable.

Personally, I find BBT to be one of the better shows on TV but that isn't necessarily a high bar.

I forgot to mention these programs along with the other programs I mentioned previously:

"Card Sharks" from the Game Show Network
"Password Plus" from the Game Show Network
"Super Password" from the Game Show Network
The original "Family Feud" from the Game Show Network
"The $25,000 Pyramid", "The $100,000 Pyramid" and "The Pyramid" from the Game Show Network
"Match Game" from the Game Show Network
"The Garfield Show" from the Cartoon Network

Because it's different. Every other comedy involves a young dysfunctional couple and their kids. (i.e. Up All Night, Ben and Kate, Modern Family, etc., etc.)

A 1000 channels? Not quite. I recently counted 100 or so (not including audio only channels) that we get with our package, of course there are more that we could subscribe to, but choose not to. I am in Vancouver, Canada, on Shaw Cable, BTW.

That being said, the pickings are slim between 3 and 5 AM :D

Big Brother. Not only do I watch the show, I subscribe to the live 24 hour Internet feed, and Big Brother After Dark, and I applied to be a Houseguest on Big Brother Canada ( I didn't get called back, but I did get to meet Hayden).
