anything new in Michiana?

anything happening in this area. Seems quiet for an AMP market. Is that because they have no one left working for them? I see that Shurtz has a new building looks like the Taj that Art always pines i mean whines about.

Well guys, there might be some action with Artistic Radio. Yesterday WPNT 1620 was still broadcasting CNN Headline News. This morning (Wednesday), I noticed ESPN Radio 1490 being rebroadcast on 1620. Are they now going to be doing this permanently, short term, or what?? Personally, if this re-broadcast of 1490 is going be happening, it will definitely be another stupid move to keep a constant LOW RATINGS format that AMP does not want to get rid of.
Now, if anyone does know of a format change to 1490 or 1620, I would like to know. Music would be my top pick.

I read this story yesterday in the South Bend newspaper:Article published Apr 29, 2009
Hockey arena construction forces 1490 AM switch
http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090429/News01/904290233/0/FRONTPAGE
WDND-1490 AM programs, including Silver Hawks, now on 1620 AM

[EDIT]

The signal on 1490 AM will cease sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. today, because the station’s former tower on the Notre Dame campus is coming down to make way for the university’s new hockey arena, the radio station announced.

This may be an ultimate blessing for BOTH 1490 and 1620. The 1490 location and the propagation from-which has been horrible since they moved onto campus after ND purchased the former 1490-WHOT decades ago... It is one of the worst Class C [formerly Class 4] AM stations I have ever heard... It actually required an FCC waiver of “full community coverage” when it moved there in the first place... TERRIBLE SITE! The current 10kw 1620 facility isn't much better... It is one of the worst X-Band stations, also... ‘Just compare 1660 in Kalamazoo [which was built right] for stunning proof. Maybe Art will find a good consultant, realtor, and site for a two-station diplex and do it right... Probably NOT :-[

BTW, it strikes me as rather interesting that Artistic “is forced” to hit the big red button on the 1490 rig “between 11:30AM-5:00PM” on a given day with no recourse, and do an "emergency" transfer of their sports format over to 1620. The Arties certainly had at least a one-to-two-year "heads-up" on Notre Dame’s intention to build a hockey stadium [it DOES take some time to plan construction of a sports facility]... I worked for ND for nearly nine years, and they DON’T do business that way... Be assured, Big Art had plenty of time to move his easy-to-engineer 1kw AM radio station off ND property – he just didn’t want to – or didn’t care. Now, the land graters are unearthing his hapless ground system, his signal is silent, and he probably doesn’t care... Get ready for a flood of tearfull FCC filings and cheesy STA requests. What a shameful entity to inherit the once-very-fine WNDU Stations facilities :'(

Hippo brings up a good point about the one-to-two year "heads-up" on the ND land grab. What makes it even more interesting is it was (roughly) two years ago when the 1490 tower fell due to some intense straight line winds. The station operated on low power with a 150' wire strung between the building and a tree for more than nine months before another self supporting tower was erected on the site!

At this point, ArtMedia could save an electric bill by just leaving 1490 dark.

;D ...Or, the could take the tax cut and give it away (or to me)!!! Right???? 8)

Lost signals?? Emergency transfers? Hit the big red button? WHAT!!!!! There was a time when non angotti's were managing south bend and those managers had open lines of communication with notre dame in many areas of the campus including the chief architect for the university. There were managers who then briefed the angottis of the long term ND plans since A2 was too busy to meet with ND officials, there was a time when the engineers had plotted out a new locaton on campus for the tower, apres tumbling downward, fully marked and approved by the university and the city just needing the signed paperwork, further there was a time when an alternate site just off campus was city approved as well. That tower was never going to stay there long; high end condos, retail and innovaton park businesses do not want to see a broadcast tower from thier windows. ND made it clear they wanted it moved and would work to find a new site instead Artie built a bigger eyesore for you to gaze upon the pristine ND campus from the road. First lose the revenue and prestige of ND sports, now lose tower and signal. Not a fully depreciated tower, a brand new expensive self supporting tower and possibly a new transmitter. Wow wonder what that is going to do to the company value. Tax writeoff?? AMP is probably still trying to digest the Ft Wayne loss the last thing they need is another tax loss. Maybe they will entertain an offer to sell what is left to the man with money in Chicago.
Just more in a long list of why the board members for AMP are asleep at the meetings or are really gullible. When you don't repair a damaged tower straight/gusty winds/ rainy winds/mild breezy winds will bring it down, when you don't repair damaged ownership...................

Thank you, gmradio, on further "AMP-lifying" on the 1490 comedy of errors. Yep, that sure was a shiny new expensive self-supported 165' boo-boo. It's gone now...wonder where it was halled off to. As I mentioned...it couldn't have been more than 2 years old. Everybody's gone fishin'...no one minding the store.

Regards,
