They say they are providing AOL for free (with your own broadband connection) but what they are providing is the same stuff that has been offered free to anybody through their website all along. Specifically, they have taken away many of the XM Music Channels from members who opt for free access and now members only get the limited number of channels that have always been free through Netscape Radio (Spinner) or WinAmp.
 
I read the faq and found the keyword to enter. You have to login and select free or $9.95 per month unlimited dial up!
 
The original message is correct.

Even if you had a fully paid AOL account before, converting it to free dumps the extra, non-free-accessible XM channels.

The free AOL product is somewhat in limbo...those who didn't have a paid account before can't access chat yet, for one. But I wouldn't be surprised to see the extra XM channels never show up on the free side.
