AOL PAYS $315 MILLION FOR HUFFINGTON POST WEBSITE

I don't think it's a terrible idea. HuffPo draws a ton of traffic. They even beat Drudge! And I'm sure they outdraw any of AOL's sites (including the mothership). They bought HuffPo to act as an umbrella over AOL's content providing sites.

If one were to compare it to, say News Corp. buying MySpace (what a disaster that was!), then AOL did it right.

Of course, it all depends on what kind of revenue HuffPo brings in.
