AOL Takes Away XM Channels

Warning! If you opt for AOL's "free" membership (not including the price for broadband from your ISP, telco or cable company), you lose many of the XM Radio channels. All you get under this "new" deal are the same channels that have been available to ALL Internet users in the past via Netscape Radio, Spinner or WinAmp. They say AOL is free but they lie. All they are doing is offering the same content they have been offering for free through their website (plus AOL email addresses). If you take AOL's free offer, you may lose many of the XM channels.

I went and reactivated my account from 3 years ago to free and I logged into the radio and got the CD quality and all the XM stations.

I always used my cousins account which he paid for AOL. He must have switched to the free because and all I can access when I login is the low crappy bit rate audio which I could not change. I don't care about the XM stations but I do care about the AOL stations.

What I don't understand is when I reactivated my account for free and am able to get the full quality. If anyone would try this for me but sign up for the free AOL deal and then log into the radio using Internet Explorer and see if you can change the audio quality to high speed.

On the AOL site it is like a big maze that leads no where. I can't find out anything and I can't find the forums for nothing about the radio. Just a lot of junk forums.

My radio is CD Quality now but I know that soon it will go to dial up sound. Like I said I already have XM so I don't care if they only give me the 20 stations but give me the CD Quality for their AOL stations. The low bitrate sounds terrible.

I reactivated a closed AOL account and had them flip it to free.

I get XM channels. Are there still XM channels available to non-members, or is having them a sign that I have the regular membership?

I can't change the bit rate...even when signed onto AOL. It says something about this tab only being available to AOL members.

So yes, I'm confused. :D

Of course, I knew that.

But the XM channels have been available to AOL members who are not subscribed to XM, which is what I was talking about.

I'm still trying to figure out of n0n-AOL members can get any of the XM channels via AOL.

You get 20 XM stations even if you don't sign in and just go to Internet Explorer to listen to AOL Radio but you get metalic dial up sound. What I don't understand is why I was able to reactivate on the website a old accound and I am getting the complete AOL Radio with all the XM stations and the CD quality sound. I know soon it will go to limited AOL Radio.

I'm also getting only the free XM channels on my newly-free AOL account.

Here's a web page with the differences:

Here's the listing of the other channels, including a note that "Free AOL" users can't get these extra channels:

I don't understand why I am able to get all the channels. How is the sound quality on the limited XM stations, is it dial up metalic sound. They should do something about this. They should offer the better sound quality with all the XM stations alacart paid for people who just want the radio.

I'd like to see some of AOL's channels on XM like the classical channels. They really should have classical channels that are divided according to genera, periods. I really like the Mideval/Rennassiance channel. Maybe add some of the international channels like Japanese pop and German Schlager/Pop.
