Aphex FM Pro Model 2020 how does it sound? ( against Optimod and Omnia )

I think the descriptions are pretty accurate as I remember the sound. I didn't chime in to say the same thing...

If you're in a market where loudness is king you'll have a hard time keeping up with the 2020, but for a classical type format
where overly bright highs and such aren't an issue, it can play just fine. It'll probably sound OK on the format that Lee has (80's-90's) as
the music wasn't mastered like it is today...(though the re-issues of that material "fixes" that "problem"). Just don;t expect it to be too loud.

Now, the debate chimed in on what the definition of "loud" is. I didn't chime in on that because that's a definition that changes from market to market. It'll be easier to nail Jello to a wall than to try to define that.

The other debate is from the opinions that all DSP processing sounds harsh - period.

If the question concerns the 2020 versus the 2200, then I can speak to that because I replaced a 2200 with a 2020. I found the 2200 to be pretty vanilla - i.e. it didn't hurt the ears no matter how it was set, but it also didn't make for loud/punchy/fat/etc audio. To my ears, there was no low-end through it, which is something I like to hear (yes, I had the high-pass filters bypassed). Conversely, the 2020 gave me as much bottom as I could possibly stand along with accurate high end and warm mids. One thing to keep in mind though: the 2020 does not inject what isn't there. So, on bass deprived source material, it is not going to create phantom low notes or overtones. Again though, I'm running this on Classical/Jazz with light-AC density and some thump - I'm not going for competitive. I'm a real fan of high-end analog equipment in the recording world - but as much as I like to track drums to 2" tape, I also enjoy dumping those tracks to the computer for editing afterwards. I also like analog summing the mixdown instead of "mixing in the box". BUT, there is no way in God's great green earth I would ever look back fondly on splicing tape or punching in edits on 2" machine. What I guess I am saying is that, I like the 2020 for my own, controlled, purposes here; but for way less money and grief, you can do so much more with an OmniaONE. If comparing the 2020 to the 2200, I'd take the 2020 everytime, though (just don't expect either of those two boxes to knock a hole in the dial without significant sonic trade-offs).

Over the past couple of months, I finally had a chance to *really* play around 'under the hood' to see what kind of magic I can make.

These presets are "Cleveland loud"...which means, they may be a bit quiet in markets with insane loudness wars (Such as NYC).

It is possible to make these much louder, I just haven't done it. ;)
