Yes, I know this is a radio forum, but everyone who lived it has a special memory
of when Neil Armstrong took that 'one small step' for mankind.
I was 18 at the time, and had a summer job working at the Gold Cup Bakery in Forty Fort in the evenings.
I lugged a "portable" :
black and white TV from my parent's bedroom, without permission, into work. (We had another TV downstairs, and I knew they'd understand.)
That was in a time when no one ever would take a TV to work, but no one said a word about it; we all wanted to see it when the first man landed on the moon.
If memory serves, the eagle landed around 8:40 PM, but there was not much video transmission 'til the actual event.
We heard the TV anchors blab on, and occassional audio transmissions from the astronauts.
There was a long delay 'til Neil came out, and people started wondering why.
Checking systems was the guess of the TV anchors.
Later it came out that Neil and Buzz had taken Holy Communion upon landing on the lunar surface.
It wasn't 'til after 11 PM that Neil made his historic descent, and we all watched in awe, humility, and with some pride.
The machines at the bakery whirred and hummed, but we all stood spellbound watching the television.
Here's some of what we saw:
