APPLE FOUNDER STEVE JOBS HAS DIED

Say what you will about the man, but I think it's very hard to argue the impact that he's had on the personal computing industry. Even if you hate his products, without Apple, it would not have pushed companies like Microsoft, and now Google, to really innovate to give us the technology we have today.

Think about it, 30 years ago a home computer was really just a dream, outside of Pong and Atari. Now, not only is it common to have more than one computer in a house, nearly everything we do is influenced by it. We are now able to carry around a small computer device such as an Android phone or iPhone in our pocket, which is hundreds of times more powerful than servers that used to take up rooms bigger than a one bedroom apartment.

I know he's not the only one who innovated in the field, but he has certainly been one of the key people first in PC's and now in digital music, movies, etc.

I noticed that Local Media here in San Fran did cover the death of Jobs for one minute but they had to go across town from Apple offices in cupertino to cover a workplace shooting at a concrete plant where a community leader is wanted for murder. Nation media has more details on this

That's what happens when news of your death breaks within the "prime access" hour.

I will remember Jobs for the Apple II era because when I was little I associated Apple for the Apple II and the MAC. I do know back in the 1980's after the internal debate at Apple over the LISA and the MAC I'm not sure which founder back Lisa or Mac when Woz and Jobs were there. I remember Scully had Apple in the 1990's while Jobs was at Next and Pixar I also remember Apple going down when Scully was there and Apple was seen as a stagnant company in the 1990's. Well the last 11 years at apple when Jobs came back it made a huge comeback. I wish Woz can return to Apple but that is a lame idea now because Woz would be criticized for being a throwback from the 1970's and 1980's.

Jobs pushed LISA really hard, from documentaries I have seen on the Apple story. It's failure lead to Jobs being exiled from the company. Of course, then he went on to found NeXt computers, which was a continuation of the project, and was later bought by Apple. I think looking back that anyone can see that it was a giant mistake to let Steve go in the first place, as that lead the company down the road of almost extinction. Had it not been for an infusion of cash from Microsoft to develop Word and Works for Mac (as part of the antitrust settlement) Apple would have been dead before OSX, iPod, or iPhone ever would have been introduced.

Had that happened, who knows where the MP3 and Smartphone industry would be today. I'm sure someone would have stepped up to compete, but would the products be moving at such a rapid pace to try to leapfrog each other like they have been doing for the past decade?

Also, will that pace continue without the outright hunger to strive that Steve had (so much so that he worked until 2 months before his death)? Again, I'm not saying he was perfect, far from it. But without his innovation in the field, will other competitors take a foot off the gas pedal, knowing that they don't need to try so hard?

Please use first names and last names in reference to folks you post about, as you cannot expect reader to know who "Woz" and "Scully" are based on those names alone. At the very least, use first names and last names in the first references to them.

For those of you keeping score at home...

Woz = Steve Wozniak, co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne (who bailed very early in the process).

Scully = John Scully, hired from Pepsi back in the mid-80s to take over as CEO after Jobs' ouster.

G4 had extensive coverage (But I think that's mainly attributable to the fact that the news broke during Attack Of The Show instead of some other program like Campus PD )

Cheers & 73 :D

CBS broke into programming to report the death.

I don't think any of the other networks broke into programming.
I was at the beach.

And because I didn't tape "Jeopardy" (on the NBC station at 7) just in case, I lost half the episode. After the long-winded report, they didn't go back. I kept seeing cast members of "Survivor" and hearing a set of call letters that began with K.

Now I could have gone out and bought another VHS tape because the other one was full, but they are hard to find. I had already taken the risk of losing something on another tape just to keep from accidentally taping over the final Andy Rooney, which I haven't watched.

The good news is the champ was performing like Ken Jennings and Saturday night reruns are likely for his episodes. Provided the local affiliate happens to do it.

I pickup VHS at BJ's 10 tapes for $17.99.
