Application For a Translator at 4 Times Square

Northeast Radio Watch states that the owners of the construction permit for translator W296BT have applied to the F.C.C. to have it located at 4 Times Square. They have asked for the frequency 106.5 FM.
The article envisions a rather complicated sequence of events involving this translator. It poses the possibility they could lead to the translator either relaying an HD2 station, as is being done in some other cities, or providing better coverage in Manhattan to a station such the new WKLV 96.7 that will be broadcasting K-Love from New Rochelle.
As the ERP would be under 50 watts, the signal would be mainly receivable in Manhattan, and small slivers of the outer boroughs. The article expects that the 106.5 frequency would only be temporary, as it is so close to that of WLTW. It says that a shift to 106.3 is possible. That would be bad news for fans of Thunder Country, as it is receivable on that frequency with a weak signal in parts of lower Manhattan.

Lite FM and WQXR-FM will fight it. Even if it eventually relocates to 106.3, it will probably be too close for either 105.9 or 106.7

It's definitely not going to be allowed at 106.5 -- FCC would be insane to allow that.

I suppose the theory with 106.5 is that it *will* interfere with 106.7 -- but that the area in which the interference happens has no population. (106.7 would be SO strong that 106.5 would only be able to interfere on the roof of the building -- if there. You might have to climb the 106.5 antenna in order to detect the interference...) The FCC has bought that in several other cases. That's probably why 106.3 or 95.9 will work despite 105.9/106.7/95.5/96.3.

I'm not entirely sure I understand why they're bothering to change frequency at all.

How far would a 50 watt signal travel? I live in Essex County west of Newark and listen to WKMK on 106.3. Am I going to have problems picking up WKMK if this 106.3 translator goes up?

The Streetz 106.5 pirate in Newark doesn't interfere with 106.7 and that's 10 miles from NYC and I'm sure Streetz 106.5 has more than 50 watts of power. It doesn't go as far as it used to when they were on 96.5 because 106.7 has IBUZ. The new translator on 106.5 will go nowhere.

ansky212, see if you can pick up Streetz 106.5. If you can't pick up Streetz 106.5 you won't be able to hear the new translator.

And I thought it was crazy when the pirates used up the first adjacents, now they're letting translators on the first adjacents.
