1912: Actor John Larkin (The Edge of Night, 12 O’Clock High) is born in Oakland, California. He was also the voice of Perry Mason for the last 8 years of its run on radio.
1932: TV personality Bob Wilkins is born in Hammond, Indiana. His biggest claim to fame for Bay Area viewers was as host of Creature Features on KTVU from 1971 to 1984. Wilkins had previously hosted a similar show on Sacramento’s KCRA-TV, and over his career he continued to perform various jobs at both stations, commuting back and forth.
1939: Actress Louise Lasser (Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman) is born in New York City.
1971: Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom ends its 8-year NBC network run. The show would wuickly become a success in syndication, lasting another 17 years.
1971: WBFF (channel 45) signs on in Baltimore, Maryland.
1974: Actress and former model Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Burn Notice) is born in Donalda, Alberta.
1980: WMDT (channel 47) begins broadcasting in Salisbury, Maryland.
1981: Actress Valerie Bertinelli (One Day at a Time) marries guitarist Eddie Van Halen. They would separate in 2001, and formally divorce several years later.
1985: KMSS-TV (channel 33) launches in Shreveport, Louisiana, the first new TV station in the market in 30 years.
2001: BBC television engineer George Hersee dies aged 76. British TV geeks revere him for creating the most famous and popular test pattern in the U.K., Test Card F, featuring a photo of his daughter Carole (used for adjusting and testing flesh tones). It was the first BBC test card to be transmitted in color, as well as the first to feature a person, and quickly became an iconic British image (and a frequent subject of parody).
2007: A magnificent voice (and a helluva great actor) is silenced: Roscoe Lee Browne dies of cancer in Los Angeles, aged 81.
2007: MSNBC announces that its TV simulcast of Imus in the Morning is being canceled immediately after public outcry concerning the host's remarks about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.
