April 2025 Bay Area Radio PPM Ratings

Hard to imagine 560 being silent. The great Jim Lange and others must be rolling in their graves...

Many thought that back in the day of Personality driven MOR, that KSFO just might be the world's Greatest Radio Station! (with apologies to KMPC)

They were each great but very different. KSFO was looser and more spontaneous.

As for rolling in their graves, a signal is only as good as what you put on it. I think 560 was gone before Lange was.

Would not at all surprise me if The Game and KDON are crushing KYLD in certain demos in San Jose. Although KDON doesn't subscribe to the South Bay Ratings book, it would be rather interesting to see how they actually did.

Who in the San Francisco Bay Area even cares about KDON? Who at KDON would even care about listenership in the San Francisco Bay Area?

Come on, Henry. You said the same thing a month or two ago. Be real.

KDON doesn't care who's listening from an adjacent market. As for WILD or The Game, KDON isn't competition, it's interference.

Sometimes, if I'm far enough south, I'll tune in KPIG and enjoy the music they program. (My taste runs along those lines. Back in the day I used to do the same thing with KFAT.) Neither station ever gave a rat's patoot if I was listening.

There's an expression in the credit card industry that's applicable to this situation too. A person who carries one of their credit cards but pays it off at the end of each month isn't a valued customer with a stellar credit score. S/he's a freeloader. If you're tuning into an out-of-market station, you too are a freeloader. They don't care, so long as you don't also become a nuisance.

I remember Jim Lange. Wasn't he on KABL at one point? I seem to recall that he did much of their VO work (IDs and imaging, mainly) as well as having a program (I recall what it was called), but it was so long ago (~20 years), I could be inventing stuff like a rougue AI bot haha...

Lange was on KFRC during at least part of the Magic 61 era, then at KABL, including its move to an FM in Walnut Creek/Concord. After that, he retired.

What is kind of interesting, is that while KDFC is number 6, way down on the list is KUSC (for the last three months), with something just above the random noise level.

Uninformed guess: someone who's carrying a PPM and likes classical has had to spend some extended amount of time in the LA area for business or family reasons.

Or, if the stream is encoded the same as the OTA signal, then it could be that PPM carriers in SF are listening to the LA station online.

That's possible, but KDFC and KUSC are co-owned by USC, they play essentially the same music and share talent between the two operations. So there's not much reason to stream the distant one unless someone's a bit homesick.
