April 28, 1965 KHJ Aircheck

In the YouTube link below is an portion of KHJ's second on the air.

The aircheck is the end of The Real Don Steele's show into Dave Diamond's show.

Just one day earlier the new 93/KHJ was rushed on the air after KFWB got wind of RKO's plan.

As a result in this aircheck Boss Radio does not sound quite like the polished product we all remember.

Thank you for that. That is so cool. Notice how a song only two years old was already an oldie? KHJ sounds great to me. I was 20 years old then and a drama student at Carnegie Mellon. I went to LA that summer and I doubt if I ever turned of KHJ one time. The minute I got there I knew they were great. I had read about the flip in Billboard and I wondered how they could compete against KFWB and KRLA. It was obvious when I heard the three together.

In those days, anything a year old or more was considered an oldie...and I've heard jocks from that era say things like "an oldie from earlier this year".

If you go back and listen to airchecks of KFWB and KRLA up until KHJ's debut, they were very current-focused...oldies were rare. It really was Drake who built the use of Goldens into more than just a once an hour thing.
