What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is a goin' on with KTAR? Been sucking the wind of KFYI since last November. Now they find themselves beaten again by the station that airs a dead man mid-days. KNIX is en Fuego, and the WOW Factor scores another win. Read it and 'splain it to the bewildered Buckeye Boyz.

KTAR thought that the pissed off white man market was much larger than it was. Serves them right, they had a great show with Bruce, but now they are dead to me.

In my opinion, that is only part of KTAR’s problem. Bruce St. James and Pamela Hughes had gotten tired and boring so I was glad to see them leave. The answer though was not to take away more time from their best program: Arizona’s Morning News. Instead of expanding that programming with say Arizona’s Afternoon News, they cut it down by an hour and gave 8:00 AM to noon to Mike Broomhead. The other mistake? Not being live and local from noon to 2:00 PM right in the middle of the day. Nobody wants to hear Dave Ramsey at night, let alone in the middle of the day. KTAR needs to decide if they want to be a legitimate news station and have more news programming or fully embrace the talk format and round up the lineup with live and local talent all day like KFI in Los Angeles. In my opinion, this hodgepodge they have been doing just does not work.

But, Broomhead....what a loser. Uneducated electrician spouting off tired old angry cliche baloney for pissed off incels. That doesn't build an audience. Ramsey is a talibornagain ass hat tyrant. His callers are all trailer park idiots that can't understand the complexities of Hee Haw. KFI is a great station, good stuff...except for the tired Beavis and Butthead shock jock wannabees during drive time.

Broomhead was a better fit on KFYI. Listening to Ramsey is extremely fatiguing.

I'll take John & Ken any day over Gaydos & Chad.

There's something wrong at KTAR. But without being able to fully access the Nielson numbers, we're just guessing. Perhaps the Old Gringo might share some of the secret numbers kept in his guarded compound.

Yes, KTAR's attempt at grooming Lunkhead into a moderate (or so-called "voice of reason") is laughable. In short order, he's nothing of the sort. You also nailed it regarding Ramsey, even though I think you're being "too" kind on him. :devilish:

Needless to say, the most embarrassing thing about Gaydos & Chad is that they actually believe they're funny. There isn't a more annoying duo on the air today, at least on the way home! 🙄

I have felt that KTAR has been pretty disjointed for a while now. Wanted to give Broomhead a chance after Bruce and Pamela, but he has become boring and predictable. Gaydos and Chad are bad too, especially Gaydos. Talk about a drama king that thinks he is funny! Chad by himself is tolerable. Monica Lindstrom is good. Barry Markson is decent. IMHO

Broomhead does a very respectable job. I never worked with him directly but in my dealings with him he strikes me as well-informed with ample knowledge of national and Arizona issues. There is value in having someone with a blue collar background broadcast to an audience with large numbers of blue collar listeners. That said, I think KFYI was smart to bring on James T Harris. Entertaining and controversial. It's a good fit.

Well, yeah, but when they relegated Pat McMahon to the basement and eventually let him go, that was the last straw for a lot of people. I'd be hard-pressed to think of any other local station that has squandered local goodwill as miserably as 92.3 has - they don't even do the live and local "Christmas Carol" anymore. That one would at least be a freebie and get more listeners (and donations) than the Beg-a-Thon. Heck, is Femino's "Voice to America" (one of the few non-brokered weekend shows) even on the schedule anymore?

I agree. People are simply sick of beans and rice where Paul Harvey & LIVE & LOCAL news used to be. And after a really horrible year, hearing in-debt people call in for advice from a guy who's currently being sued...not to belabor the obvious, but that's neither informative nor entertaining.

They should sunset out beans & rice and give that time to Detour Dan - who's taken for granted as bad as Pat McMahon was.

Then again, WFYI is down two whole points since January while KTAR is only down 1 point, and KJZZ is flat.

With regards to Rush, the repeats didn't do badly around the country, since the talking points aren't very compelling anyway. I wonder how the new guys will do in the old man's slot. My guess is they will loose some listeners because Clay Travis doesn't have any street cred. But that's a topic for next month.

KNIX continues to amaze.

At the opposite end of the "pissed off white man" market, what's up with this "Bounce" thing?

Is it just a - pardon the reference - "wow factor" or is the rise in ratings sustainable?

I haven't looked too hard at the numbers, but the station sounds good, and it seems like someone has taken that rim shot and tried to make something out of it. Will Sierra H stick with it?

I keep seeing people talk about the format, but right now Phoenix is one of the few places that has it, and it seems to be connecting for now. Don't know if it's the latest incarnation of Jammin' Oldies yet.

Sticking with it is all Sierra H does. Mega has been in the format now for 2 decades and has extremely rarely seen above a 2 share. They stuck with Dance on 101.1 (albeit a MUCH worse signal at the time) for over 6 years while never getting above a 1 share. The first incarnation of the Beat (classic hip hop) was the shortest lived format burst on the frequency, lasting only about 4 years or so. This version of the format is broader, playing more pop and has staying power. It's never going to beat the likes of KEZ, KOOL or KNIX but it's going to do great for them.
