April 8: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on April 8. Discuss or comment as you please……

1949: Sportscaster Jim Lampley is born in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

1954: The first live local NTSC colorcast goes out from WKY-TV (channel 4, now KFOR-TV) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

1957: CFCR-TV (channel 4, later CFJC-TV) begins broadcasting in Kamloops, British Columbia.

1960: Actor John Schneider (The Dukes of Hazzard, Smallville) is born in Mount Kisco, New York.

1968: British singer Petula Clark stars in an NBC TV special, inadvertently making history in the process. While taping a duet with guest Harry Belafonte, Clark had touched his arm in a friendly, affectionate manner, alarming a representative of the show's sponsor (Chrysler), who feared the brief and innocent gesture would offend Southern viewers. He insisted that one of the earlier takes, with Clark and Belafonte standing well away from each other, be substituted. Clark and her husband (producer of the show) flat-out refused, erased all other takes of the song, and delivered the finished program to NBC with the touch intact. It is the first time a white woman and a black man are seen exchanging physical contact on American television. (And gee, somehow Civilization survived.....) ::)

1968: Actress Patricia Arquette (Medium) is born in Chicago.

1979: The final episode of All in the Family airs on CBS. The show would return in the fall, retooled and retitled Archie Bunker’s Place.

1984: Actor Taran Noah Smith (Home Improvement) is born in San Francisco.

1984: Actress Kirsten Storms (Days of Our Lives, Kim Possible, General Hospital) is born in Orlando, Florida.

1990: Twin Peaks debuts on ABC.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)
