April Co-anchoring Weekend GMAZ

April is subbing for Tess this morning on Weekend GMAZ. I guess April is the up and coming anchor at 3TV. She also regularly anchors the 4:30am half-hour of regular GMAZ as well as doing the weather.

I was surprised. I look forward to Tess on Saturday mornings but I can't say April was any sort of disappointment.

Before coming to 3TV and working as part of the Forecasters, April was an anchor for a couple of stations in Oregon and Washington. When she came here, she began her new life as a weather personality, though she had filled in doing weather before.

I remember that. It took me a long time to accept her as a credible weather person. IIRC, she had very little weather experience before 3TV. Anybody can "fill in" on weather, particularly at small stations.

Good to see April doing an entire newscast. Weekends are probably the best because she can shine without being lost in a crowd.

I wonder did KTVK pay for April to go back to school to get her Meteorology degree? While I understand if her ultimate goal is to be an anchor, I wonder why see went the Forecaster route first? April's commercial makes it seem like she always wanted to be a Weatherguesser.

I would believe that Belo has tuition reimbursement as one of the employee benefits so they probably did pay for April to go back to ASU and for Brittney to long distance learn at Mississippi State.
April was an anchor when she took this job. The other option would have been field reporter and fill in anchor which means outside every day, especially when it is hot. As the weather personality, you will spend most of your time in an air conditioned building.

Huh??? IIRC, April started as the weather anchor on Weekend GMAZ, which meant that she spend 3 long hours doing live reports often outside. She was essentially an anchor/reporter at the beginning.

And when management got tired of Brad doing weather on GMAZ, they moved April in to that role. I would guess that when she was interviewed for the position, KTVK management was looking at putting her in the weekday morning position. Working the weekends gave her a chance to get a good start on her degree work at ASU.

Also remember that before they hired April, 3TV had the infamous Weather Wannabe contest where three applicants spent a weekend in Phoenix and handled the weather reports for Saturday and Sunday (usually after an introduction on GMAZ on Friday morning). None of the three were impressive and management had to go back to the drawing board to find someone else to hire, which ultimately became April.

GAWD! How difficult can it be to find someone to read the Phoenix weather map?

I'm thinking if he were tall enough a monkey with a banana could do it. ;D

Well, some bozo at 3TV hired Brian Webb to co-anchor weekend GMAZ. With all due respect to Brian, he was more asleep than I was on Sat/Sun mornings -- acting like he wasn't a morning person. Bulletin for Potential Morning Anchors: Do NOT take the job if you are not an early morning person or you can't become a morning person.

Bubbly personality in the morning is what makes April, Gina, Brittney, and others successful.

Former,

Interesting that you named only Women as being "bubbly." Is there a guy that you can think of, that is also bubbly during the morning shift?

Brian --

Unfortunately, men are held to a much lower standard, but Scott Light (who's now off mornings) comes to mind as enthusiastic and engaging. Javier Soto is reasonably enthusiastic at 4:30am. Pat McReynolds has been very engaging in past jobs, but doesn't seem as comfortable at CBS 5 (sometimes the co-anchors make a huge difference).

But there's a vast difference between awake and half-asleep. The early morning shift is difficult at best.

Former,

Haven't watch Light in a while, but he was great during Sunday mornings. Soto has come a long way. He used to make some mistake every segment. He smiles a lot and has fun at 4:30. I watched Fox10 for several months and thought Ron Hoon tries to keep the energy up. With his seniority, Hoon could phone it in (like some others...) but I liked his approach.

I got a good laugh today! :D

I met Ron Hoon in person before I had seen him on TV and thought he was a bit frozen. Then I began watching the KSAZ Morning Show and get a real kick out of his banter with the two morning hosts. It seems he really enjoys his job even though it begins so early in the day.

Friday 29 July saw Yetta Gibson do the 4:30 shift. We all know how good Yetta is reporting, and I think she did a great job as an anchor. I wonder would Yetta be the person who replaces Kaley during her maternity leave?

If there is a God, Tara stays banished in the newsroom during Kaley's maternity leave and Yetta anchors GMAZ. However, I don't think that 3TV will leave a marquee and highly paid player in the newsroom. Time will tell though...

Yetta rocks when she covers an event. That would be just desserts !!

Back when this thread began, April also has great talent with good mental skills for handling live TV. Either would be cool.
Nice to be GMAZ...
;)
