April Fools Pranks

In light of the possible WBRU April Fools' prank, I'm curious as to your favorite 4/1 on-air prank.

In 2003, I was doing afternoons at PIXY-103 on the Cape. It was the day after the Red Sox' season opening loss to Tampa Bay where the "bullpen-by-committee" blew a lead in the 9th inning and lost. Having already created some air as a sports-guy-of-note with my "Penalty Box" sports-opinion segment, I decided to use the element to create the prank.

I teased a big trade involving the Red Sox, Dodgers and the Cubs for the first 90 minutes of my show and dropped a couple of fictitious names from the LA Times. When I got to the Penalty Box at 4:35, I let 'em have it: according to as-yet unpublished reports from LA, the Red Sox had traded Nomar Garciaparra to the Dodgers for closer Eric Gagne. The move was precipitated by the season opening loss (as earlier mentioned). In addition, the Sox traded two minor league pitchers (to be named later) to the Cubs for IF Mark Grudzielanek.

For two hours, I fielded phone calls and the show went on and on using phoners from angry Sox fans. I let 'em off the hook at my last break (6:50) and was satisfied that the prank went well. I guess it did, because I was constantly reminded of it for months when I went out to station appearances.

Ironically, more than a year later, Nomar was traded from the Sox to the Cubs and now plays first base for the Dodgers. Even a prank contains a bit of truth sometimes.<P ID="signature">______________

Oh the best pranks HAVE to be mostly true...that's what makes them so plausible!

Bashir: Of all the stories you told me, which ones were true and which ones weren't?
Garak: My dear Doctor, they're ALL true...
Bashir: Even the lies?
Garak: Oh, *especially* the lies.

It was Opie and Anthony that did the Mayor is dead prank on WAAF and they were fired for it.

Hey Randy,

Hope you're doing well - long time no talk! I think you're right on - even a prank contains a bit of truth sometimes.

The truth in WBRU's prank is that alternative rock stations have been drying up virtually everywhere in the country with the exception of the west coast.

Fortunately (in this case at least), when most stations switch formats they don't have the luxury of a week to talk about it. Instead, they just have enough time to program Pearl Jam's "Alive" or something like that to sign off with.

But boy, it would be one sad day if WBRU ever DID switch formats. I'd cry!
