April Fools Pranks

I heard K-Earth's Michael/Madonna marriage news...
Pretty lame IMO.

And Latino 96.3's Rihanna pregnancy "news".

Did anyone else do anything worth mentioning?

Well I'm just glad that here in AZ no one went all old school ALL DAY with liners and promo's included or "flipped to country".

The best April Fool pranks that I know of were done by KROQ.

- One year they said they were "Groovy Hits of the Super 70s" and recreated the sound of a 70s-era Top 40, complete with jingles, cheesey jocks, songs like "One Bad Apple" and "Afternoon Delight," and weather reports for "the Beach Cities." I still remember turning on 106.7 and hearing American Pie come out. (This was back in the early 90s, when there had not yet been a 70s revival, Disco Saturday Night, or things like I Love the 70s on VH1. So it was a real shock!) The jocks participating (and doing great 70s voices in 2 hour shifts) were Tami Heidi, Freddy Snakesin (who was called Freddy Foreskin for the day), Scott Mason, John Frost, the Poorman, and Jed the Fish. Not sure if Kevin and Bean participated.

- Another year they declared "Pirate Radio" was back.

- And yet another year they said KROQ had gone Spanish. They were called "KROQ en Esapgnol."

Unfortunately I think the tradition pretty much has died on KROQ.

Hey Scooty, I remember hearing KROQ that day as well... What you recalled is what I remember too. And it was the early 90s maybe 1992? Another year I seem to remember KROQ and Power switching either jocks or playlists though I think it was the jocks. Do you remember?

Here was my suggestion to the powers that be of KSWD. I posted the following on the Sound forum over a week before April 1st:

Ok April Fools’ Day (April 1st) is 9 days away. I think it would be wild if on April Fools’ Day The Sound would play some of those goofy wacky novelty songs on 10at10. Or intersperse some of these throughout the day. I hope they’ll think it’s a good idea! Do you agree that it is a good idea? Anyway, I’ll start with my suggestions-
Fish Heads-Barnes & Barnes
Puttin’ on the Ritz-Taco
The Curly Shuffle-Jump N the Saddle
PacMan Fever-Buckner & Garcia
Convoy-C.W. McCall
Dead Skunk (in the Middle of the Road)-Loudon Wainwright III
Snoopy vs the Red Baron-Royal Guardsmen
Tub Thumping-Chumbawamba
Disco Duck-(famous DJ)
King Tut-Steve Martin
Kung Fu Fighting-Carl Douglas
Short People-Randy Newman
Me So Horny-2 Live Crew
Born in East L.A.-Cheech Marin
Da Da Da- Trio (popularized in those VW commercials)
Shuddupaya Face- Joe Dolce
Hot Hot Hot-Buster Poindexter aka (guess who)
I Kissed a Girl-Jill Sobule
I’m Too Sexy-Right Said Fred
Funky Cold Medina-Tone Loc
Don’t Worry Be Happy-Bobby McFerrin
Valley Girl-Moon Zappa
Video Killed the Radio Star- The Buggles
Cry-Godley & Crème

and my Top 5 Wacky Goofy Songs-

--------------------------------------------------------------
That was the jist of what I posted there. Following my lead, about 4 or 5 other listeners/posters added their own wacky similar song suggestions. All in all, there were maybe 40 songs that the station could have picked from to make their "10at10".

So did The Sound do something that "Dared to be Different"?

Sort of but nothing related to the above type songs-- They played songs that mentioned 'fool' in the title-- (from The Sound website)--

4/1 - Fool
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
Fool to Cry - Rolling Stones
Everybody Plays the Fool - The Main Ingredient
Fooling Yourself - Styx
[hmm I seem to remember hearing a Def Leppard song "Fooling" instead of the Styx song]
Fool in the Rain - Led Zeppelin
Fool on the Hill - Beatles
Fooled Around and Fell in Love - Elvin Bishop
Fool for the City - Foghat
Chain of Fools - Aretha Franklin
What a Fool Believes - Doobie Brothers
---------------------------------------------
I guess it's better to be "safe" than "sorry".

I caught the end of Marketplace. I guess they played their greatest hits on this front all episode, but I only heard one. They were talking about a firm that hires actors to fill out neighborhoods that were emptied during the housing crisis with these ridiculously friendly neighbors, who would then dissappear once the houses were sold. It sounds a bit lame in print, but it was pretty funny to listen to. I tuned in the middle and, while I wasn't totally fooled, I was wondering wtf they were doing for about 30 seconds.
