April Fool's Stunting

Anyone have any zany April Fool's radio stunts they were a part of in the past? Did you hear any good ones over the years?

I still recall the KLIF "Talk-Rock 1190" spoof promo we ran only ONCE at KLIF on the Kevin McCarthy show.

It lit up the switchboard and phone lines in the studio in such a way that poor Kev could only 'go with it' for about 40 minutes. Talking mostly with irate callers trying to argue and/or justify why this would happen to their favorite station.

Dan Bennett had to go on the air and assure KLIF's small, but loyal talk audience that we were not going to flip to a format that ran the hits of today underneath the talk of the town.

Here in Houston, we pulled a great one about 10 years ago, where all ther jocks flip-flopped shifts, time checks, etc, -we blamed it on the recent time change and a clock malfunction. Made for a great day of radio, and we kept it up from 5am until midnight.

Other than Day 1 for me on KILT, it is one of my most treasured tapes.

Kraddick's "all disco" format at Kiss-FM on April 1, 1993 comes to mind.

And that crap that Fitz did at Wild 100.3 about the electric grid being hopelessly out in Downtown Dallas, c. 2002.

It's really hard to top KSCS' 'Denton Zoo' bit. The fictional Zoo came complete with press release, web site, phone number, and a Denton City Council 'not happy' that the zoo never filed for permits. The Sheriff got a kick out of it...

KZPS has just announced the "Texas Jam" reunion featuring Van Halen, Heart, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent and more.

16 years later, people in Southern California are still talking about this one; reprinted from this morning's Star-Telegram:

In 1993, a DJ at KGB-FM in San Diego announced that the space shuttle Discovery had been diverted from Edwards Air Force Base and would soon land at Montgomery Field, a small airport in a residential area. Thousands of commuters immediately headed to the landing site, which caused huge traffic jams that lasted for almost an hour. Police had to be called in to clear the traffic and tell people with cameras, camcorders and folding chairs to go home.

Has anybody seen any escaped monkey's throwing ...stuff... at people on I-35W in Denton?... To Funny... (Denton Zoo)

I seem to remember a talk show host that always talked about monkeys escaping the zoo and throwing grunt. ::)

When I was at KVET radio in Austin in the early 90's, I remember hearing that our morning guy, Bob Cole (don't know if Sammy was with him for this or not), once arranged to swap studios with the other top morning show in town.

On that April 1st, Bob cracked open the mic at his competitor's station and frequency and did his show as usual. I think the two shows did everything, including music, as they normally would... but just on different frequencies.

Was Young Country's library stunt on April Fool's Day?

In a stunt-gone-wrong...as part of a Young Country promotion in April, 1994, DJs announced that money had been hidden inside certain books at the Fort Worth Public Library, and fans converged on the library and nearly tore the place to shreds!

I created that KLIF spoof when I was the voice of the station, and was shocked by how many listeners fell for it. The promo talked about how you could listen to your favorite talk show hosts AND hear the best music ALL AT THE SAME TIME! We gave some samples of show hosts with hit music playing under them. Pretty wacky.

When I was running The ZOO, we had an infamous FOOLS DAY PARADE. A "live broadcast" of a crazy parade happening at the intersection of two non-intersecting streets in downtown Dallas. People drove in from Fort Worth and God knows where else to look for the parade. Mark Christopher and Buffalo George Toomer worked together pre-recording segments of "live reports" with music and effects. A classic!

I was wondering the exact same thing. I tried to find some news clippings about it on the net, and came up empty handed. I bet Mike Shannon can answer this.
