April PPMs

It's interesting to see how some stations are moving up while others stay or drop.

Typical stations in the top 5.

WJYD (Joy 106.3) seems to have dropped big time since PPM came on board.

WWCD (CD101 at 102.5) continues to rise after their frequency change.

Intersting to see WTDA 103.9 also doing well for such a weak signal.

WBNS AM seems to be a flanker now .. It's down near 1230 AM levels in terms of listening.

WBNS-FM took a drop but I suspect we can contrib that to no major OSU sports (Football and Basketball seasons over)

Yes, and after jumping to 1.6 in Feb, then going 1.6 in Mar and now 1.9 in April, it doesn't appear to be a fluke.  Two of the possible reasons are (1) They are playing lots of the classic rock that LVQ has gradually dumped over the years but that many people still like, and (2) they play a decent dose of CBS-FM type Classic Hits, and Columbus remains one of only  a handful of markets this size where no big signal has that format -- even though it's a ratings topper that just gets stronger and stronger in places like Cleveland, Cincy and....everywhere.

Also, I was suprised by the magnitude of WNND's (Rewind) 1.7-2.5 jump, until I realized that that number probably includes both WNND and WNNP now that they are simulcasting 100%.  That's another one that probably  benefits some by the lack of a big-signal CBS-FM type Classic Hits.  (Although obviously a market can readily support both, as in Cincy where both WGRR and WREW are near the top.)

Also: Sunny took a healthy leap 6.5-7.9.  This is happening as Sunny -- while still softish by today's AC standards -- is sometimes adding more tempo and edge that makes 93.3 sound even snoozier by comparison.  Just don't get why CC won't take 93.3 to CBS-FM-type Classic Hits, or at minimum a much higher-tempo version of mainstream AC.  They may be having some impact against Sunny sales-wise, but there have got to be even better ways to go after Sunny, protect their own cluster, *and* build an independently-strong franchise all at the same time -- especially in a market that is deficient in big signals.

Finally, WNCI solidified its lead locally by jumping 7.8-8.9.

Looks like CD101 finally fixing their sound as well as changing to a much more powerful signal really helped them a lot in the ratings. Last year at this time they were lucky to get a 1.5, now they have a 3.6 in the ratings book. Success story of the year all things considered with that station.

Glad you pointed that out. CD101 was driving listeners away last year with their bad audio on 102.5. Now that their audio all been fixed over the last few weeks, more people are listening to [email protected]

[email protected] was voted the most popular local radio station by the readers of 614 magazine here:

So, the increase in ratings is no surprise. Also, do you think 106.7 changing formats helped CD101 in the long run?

Why is WNKO 101.7 not registering in the ratings at all? They are coming in clear throughout Franklin County.

No PPM device installed? If their not encoding (or properly encoding) no matter how PPM Meters tune in.. they will not show up.

When WNKO does start encoding PPM it will be interesting to see how it and WTDA will do in the classic hits battle. I've noticed the Rewind has added some of genx music in the playlist. So that plus their wider variety is what contributes to them doing better than Genx 106.7.

WNKO 101.7 said they will be encoding for PPM meters in the near future.
While they're at it they may want to add an online stream. If the signal upgrade was truly intended to serve people from Newark who commute to Columbus, wouldn't they want to facilitate their base's listening in, say, downtown offices?

I think as the super Q they ruffled the feathers of WNCI more than as 93Q. As 93Q they were playing the best of the 80's and 90's instead of being a true CHR at the time. Sadly WNCI was stuck in the Friday Night 80's and 70's Saturday night craze from 94 to 2000. So had 93Q been full blown CHR at the time WNCI was in that 80's and 70's funk the feathers would have truly been ruffled.
