APRIL PPMS

Pirates bring the Fan up to 3rd in men 25-54, behind DVE and the X....

Women 25-54... Kiss, LTJ, Bob-FM, Y108, Star (non-subscriber WSHH could also be in there somewhere)

Kiss and the X are #1 and #2 persons 18-34, and it ain't close.... the two stations combine for almost a 25-share.

104.7 is officially on life support. They are 9th in men 25-54 (although they are beating KDKA-AM in that demo), 13th in persons 25-54. The whole reason for doing a format like this on FM is to draw younger listeners.

The 970 ESPN morning show of Mike and Mike is getting close in men 25-54 to KDKA's number for the overall day.

Clear Channel/Pittsburgh may want to do something to improve WPGB's numbers by trying another strategy. Its obvious that KDKA-AM & FM is eating at their numbers and if 104.7 can't stop the bleeding chances are that their format will be toast.

I keep hearing stories about the demise of 104.7. I still enjoy the station a lot, but I have noticed that spots that should be sold on shows like Limbaugh and Hannity have PSAs.

I will say I don't think that's the fault of the shows. I do think it is the fault of the salesmen, who may not be inclined to sell conservative talk radio for the same mentalities that seemingly limit all sports talk advertising in this city to strip joints, car dealers, and, at one time, touts. Add the fact I can't find a NASCAR race on my radio dial in this city and somebody is neglecting a large part of the audience.

We can talk about Pittsburgh being a liberal city and how the country has gone more leftist, but Mitt Romney did get 49 percent of the vote. It's not as if there isn't an audience for this kind of programming.

I will say this. By putting Mark Madden on 104.7, it is as if the programmers there are trying to kill the format. His style of show does not relate well to keeping the audience tuned in after Hannity, and those who wish to listen to hockey talk at that hour will likely be listening to a sports station or 105.9's pregame.

Personally, I still think the demise of 104.7 may be greatly exaggerated. Perhaps it is my fandom of the station. I just can't fathom that a city the size of Pittsburgh would not have outlets for Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck, let alone Quinn and Rose. Could some local programming after 6 give the station the shot in the arm it needs?

But if it is true, how many of those shows would KDKA-AM pick up, and where else could they go?

One thing to remember, the day KDKA lost Rush to 104.7 was the day 1020 ceased being the top rated station in town. Look up the records.

I can tell you a couple of things....

What's happening to 104.7 is happening to conservative talk stations everywhere. Ratings for the format have declined dramatically since the election. And what's worse is that the 25-54 listeners are almost all gone. The station used to be very strong in the key demos, now it's 13th (and 1020 isn't much better). So how do you sell advertisers an audience of angry old people?

As far as sports radio advertising, your comments are accurate where 970 is concerned, but the Fan has real clients like banks, car dealers and health insurers. Plus Clear Channel always funneled the real billing to DVE.

I think you will see a radical realignment of the CC stations when hockey season ends. And personally I feel news/talk is going to have to be reinvented and not just be one party's talking points 24/7. That ship has sailed.
