April PPM's

Some notes: WDAS-FM jumped half a point, KWY dropped half, XTU's highest book in some time, B101 continued a steady decline, WOGL jumped better than half-a-point to its best showing in quite a while. WHYY continued downward but WPHT trails by a country mile. WISX dropped more than a point while Q102 dropped by nearly a point (but to beat a trusty dead horse, still a country mile ahead of WTDY). Otherwise, not much of interest jumped out at me.

In fact it was WXTU's highest share since April 2019. Several other large markets saw big increases in April, including NY, LA, and San Jose CA. Good month for country shares so far.

Yeah, generally was a boring month, which is fine!

News & Talk stations all slipping as the national news scene has... quieted down in past months. WHYY, KYW, WPHT all seeing shares slip.

WIOQ down and WTDY up some. Seems to be more of the CHR doldrums than anything else.

WOGL pulling ahead a bit over WBEN.

WISX took a punch to the gut a bit.

WTEL showing again, as iHeart's BIN has some audience. WDAS-AM a no-show once again.

Oh yeah. WRNB falling back below a 1.0 share, and tying their own record (as far as I know) for smallest share ever for a full-signal FM in Philly. (I could TOTALLY be wrong on that, but I thought the previous record was WMWX sinking to a 0.9). It's tied with a station that serves Monmouth and Ocean Counties!!!

Does Radio One have a plan at all for WRNB at the moment?

Country was up big in Hartford (WWYZ) last book, too. I've been listening more lately and there seems to be less of the simple-minded "bro country" around and more music with lyrical and melodic depth. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a renaissance of sorts for the genre.

I’m amused that NJ101.5 out draws WPHT. But otherwise nothing seems terribly outside the usual (at least COVID-world and seasonal usual/expected). A fairly consistent top 10 with those “play in” stations that jockey in and out of the 10 spot. A little movement otherwise among the big names—Phillies start, WIP inches up. Winter mercifully ends, KYW inches down.

As usual I’d like to be Beasley overall. But for whatever grief the company gets, Audacy shows well overall. WIP and KYW—solid. WOGL steady to up overall. B…well, it is what it is right now. Everyone has their sore spots, but assuming there’s nothing deeply shocking in the demos that belies the beauty pageant figures, the “big three” have decent portfolios to sell. No tears for any of them if they’re competent at managing what they have to work with.

WBEB is doing fine

I wonder if the warming weather has anything to do with WXTU making such a good showing after a slump? I can imagine with covid restrictions loosening and weather warming up, WXTU is being played more at cook outs, tailgates and road trips. Just a thought

In the AllAccess analysis of the April PPM's, WIOQ isn't mentioned at all. What I find most interesting about the entire analysis is that WTDY is #5 18-34. The analysis mentioned the top 9 stations in that demo and Q102 isn't among them. Maybe WTDY isn't hurting as bad as a lotta folks seem to think.
