April ratings are here

Add me to the list of people who agree Country would be a better move for 97.1

Me too, and I think Bones would do acceptably well.

I very much doubt Urban AC would even be a consideration though, factoring in the format’s demographic age and the other stations in the cluster.

All the serious music lovers listen to KXT. For everyone else, there's KEGL.

But what this really tells us is that country music is back in Dallas. Time for a third country station.

I said this years ago: iHeart could turn KEGL into a country station and they could keep the call letters & imaging.
Orrrr they could move the direction of the eagle into Southern Rock/Country which is what people in that demo in Dallas like. I think after the Freak, IHeart is done spending money for awhile on what “might” work for this signal

iHeart really doesn't need classic country in Dallas. It needs Bobby Bones in Dallas. It doesn't even have to beat KSCS. It just has to place.
Do they need Bobby Bones in Los Angeles too? You said in another post, Dallas is a cow town? Does that include Highland Park? IHeart would get cooked trying to be the third country station worse than they did when they were sports and/or guy talk. Country doing well now in Dallas is just a typical summertime trend

Orrrr they could move the direction of the eagle into Southern Rock/Country which is what people in that demo in Dallas like.
And what real research proves that to be a good opportunity?

Given the miserable failure of KZPS when they tried that in 2007, safe to say that's not going to happen.
Not to mention that several attempts at such a format have been tried in markets that one would think to be even more amenable to it and none have succeeded.

And what real research proves that to be a good opportunity?
Then where is there a format hole in the market that iHeart could fill? The cluster already has a CHR, Hot AC, AC and Classic Rock outlet. Other formats are covered by different owners. Should they try to wedge something into the overall market format spectrum? Or simply go straight after an existing competitor in DFW? Could they try a Spanish language format on 97.1 again?

The odd thing is that KEGL might be better off under different ownership with different priorities (hello national religious networks) but that’s not going to happen.

Huff spoke if the miserable failure of KZPS doing the original Lone Star format. Certainly intended to be Texas-centric Americana, the format became more of what I call Biker Bar Music. The numbers weren't there. Had the format followed more of an Americana line being Texas heavy in artists, especially those who play the metroplex, it might have worked with some time given it. The real issue I suspect was sales.

The Lone Star advertising concept was advertisers that were, more or less, the Lone Star 92.5's official beer, airline or whatever. If Coors is on, then no other beer can be. Only one commercial an hour that is adlibbed by the on air talent imbedding it in the programming. Ad agencies, I was told, couldn't wrap their head around the concept and not impressed with the numbers.

The commercials were very well done. Jon Dylan comes out of the Allman Brothers saying that is his wife's favorite song. He said during that last set of music he discovered the Allman Brothers are playing in New Orleans Friday night and that is going to be his wife's Anniversary present. He said, I jumped on the Southwest Airlines website and discovered they have a number of flights daily. So he got the 4 o'clock flight arriving in New Orleans about 4:45. From there it's dinner and the concert. After a night in X hotel, we return on the 10 am flight to Dallas where we arrive about 10:45. He says he was amazed by the affordable prices Southwest offers plus the flexibility is scheduling flights and doing it all online all with Southwest Airlines, Lone Star 92-5's go to airline. And to our friends, don't tell my wife. I want it to be a surprise.

About a day or two later a severe thunderstorm rolls in to Dallas producing a tornado. This happens right about 5pm. The jock announces this on the air and says, you don't want to be stuck on the freeway with a tornado coming. I'd like to suggest that little bar you wanted to try by work. Check them out until this thing gets past us. You do know how to know if it's a great bar. Just order a Coors in the can. Look at the mountains on the can. If the mountains are blue, that Coors is the perfect temperature to drink. Only Coors lets you know your beer is cold enough to drink just by looking at the can. If the mountains are blue, pop the top on that Coors, a favorite here at Lone Star 92-5.

Sure. NY too
Then they should flip Q104.3 because Bobby Bones is needed there. Just because a host is national and does well in select cities, it doesn’t mean them entering a new market is going to make headway against two powerhouse country stations. The 6+ ratings in Dallas a few months ago showed Spanish lead the way. The Eagle is here for a reason. It’s cheap, it saves money, they can actually profit not paying high priced talent and keep the Mavericks at the same time. And I can’t imagine they’re paying Ben and Skin. I believe they’re buying time now. But my source could be wrong. As we see with cume enough people like it. I do think B/S should be moved to mornings and replace woody. I do think that show tanks their station

They're not going to flip any of their FMs in NY or LA.

Which is why they haven't flipped Eagle to country.

Charles1234, I'd email, text or call the station. They could tell you. Unless somebody that works there is on this board and takes the time to scroll through a post about ratings, you're out of luck.

When will KEGL change to a country music station?

It's been rumored to flip to country since 2011; Clear Channel was going to flip to "97-1 the Bull" that year... seems like the country flip rumor has lived on every year since then.
