A similar thing has happened in Philadelphia, where a heritage classic hits station has fallen behind an adult hits station. The classic hits station has been adding more rhythmic music in an attempt to differentiate it. So far, it hasn't worked.

In terms of revenue, KJKK has been ahead of 98.7 for quite some time.
 
It's been a long time since I had WBAP as a preset on my radio. I saw their numbers and wondered what on earth caused them to sink so much. I decided to look at their schedule. Aside from Mark Levin (I'm not a fan) and some of the morning show folks (who I actually like), I have no idea who they have on that station and not a clue as to why I would want to listen. It's a very generic lineup of no-names who, I have to assume, all talk about the same topics. At least with KRLD they still have news in the morning and afternoon. Even KSKY has Mark Davis and a parade of known quantity national hosts that give me some clue about what they have to offer.

With the impending loosening of FCC ownership caps, I suspect group owners may wait to see the specifics of the new rules and the actual shape of mergers and acquisitions before making any radical format changes. Fewer and larger local clusters will have a huge impact on format dynamics and decisions.
