Arbitron copyrighted information

When will Arbitron have a competitor? Arbitron is a freakin monopoly! Their methods are outdated, and you can bet they are not in ANY hurry to roll out PPM's to the masses!

Male 25-54 receives an envelope in the mail from Arbitron wanting his participation in a survey. They are willing to pay....oh, $5 for his time!

Wife of Male 25-54 says, "Honey, it's from a company called Arbitron, they want you to fill out a survey each day for 7 days on a small flyer thingy.

Male 25-54 - "I don't have time for that dear, I have to work, YOU fill it out!

Arbitron results:

Male 25-54
#1 - Lite FM
#2 - B98.5
#3 - Star94

How many times does THIS happen??? More often they will ever mention!

I knew there were very specific restrictions, however, I was not aware of this particular one. My apologies. =)

Are those really the top 3 stations Male 25-54? Or is that just a hypothetical example to support your argument? My guess is that female targeted stations never dominate in men to that degree.

No... :) That was my hypothetical example when a woman fills out a diary targeted for the Male of the house 25-54. Guy gets credited for liking whichever station she likes. Its really a horrible way to gauge who likes what station! And much like the BCS, it is not expected to change ANYTIME soon.

Do you remember back in the 1990's, a company out of Arizona had sensors installed on highway signs to detect what FM radio station you were listing to as you passed by? Whatever happened to that? Some said that would be the next big thing. They also had numbers saying Country was more popular than Arbitron said for the Atlanta market. Of course it could be the Pizza guy listing to Kicks as he passes-by the sign 15 times in an hour. (lol)<P ID="signature">______________

Sadly, that's true. At least Neilsen has an electronic box (similar to TiVo)for the top markets (I don't remember how far it goes to, probably no lower than the 15th market) that records what channel and for how long you watch, then pings Neilsen's server via modem with the numbers. Of course, that's even skewed. How many TVs in lower income areas do you think have that box? And, yes, the statistics of that analogy fall on racial lines as well.

So, now let's go to the radio: In EVERY market in the country, ARBITRON asks a significant small number of people to make a journal of what you listen to on the radio and for how long. Then, mail that journal in when the alotted time has ended. Of course, within that less than ten percent of people asked to take the survey agreed, I'm sure less than three percent actually turned it in at all, or in an "acceptable" completeness (yes, ARBITRON even throws out many surveys because they were deemed "incomplete") Come on. If much of you are like me, you're thumbing around your favorite stations (like there are many of us these days devoted to one station) trying to find something you like, then hitting the "scan" button once nothing is found. And, if you DO find something, you're not there on that station for long. Now, write all of that down for a mere compensation, probably less than what the freaking journal and your pen cost you!

It does fascinate me that there are no other competitors out there for Neilsen and ARBITRON, especially with the technology out there these days. I mean, how hard would it be to make a PDA-type device that you could connect to your car stereo or home radio that records our radio listening? There could be a docking station at home that hooks up to your phone and it pings the server when it's in the station, charging up. Hell, "Joe Blow Media Research" can have a better report than ARBITRON just by going on the street and ask the two simplest questions: "How old are you?" and "What's your favorite radio station?"

So, for other discussions of numbers, there's this other blog on a site that has "Access" to "Atlanta", that's owned by one of the biggest media conglomerates in the country. Well, the heaviest hitters in Atlanta Media (print, audio AND video) are owned by them, anyway.

Nevertheless, it's extremely disappointing that the only radio ratings group in the country would be so secretive about their numbers. Of course, I know they want you to PAY for their data. Besides, the radio stations will just skew the numbers in their favor anyway. Have you ever heard 20 stations claim to be the number 1 station in town? They can say that.....by looking at a particular demographic. They should have a disclaimer. "ATLANTA'S NUMBER ONE HIT STATION (among dogs and cats, ages 3-6 months)"

> I mean, how hard would it be to make a PDA-type device that you could connect > to your car stereo or home radio that records our radio listening?

Technically? I wouldn't think it would be hard.

But I also don't believe the information would be even as good as what we currently get for the simple reason that it would be able to determine what the _radio_ was doing but not what the _listener_ was doing. There's too much potential for credit to be given simply for the device being on when there's not even anyone within 100 yards of the radio.

That's a good article, PV. Interesting enough, it came from Reuters, a media source that news outlets can choose from. Others are the Associated Press Syndicate and Knight Ridder, and a few more that escapes my mind at the moment. The sad thing that I got from the article is that since Arbitron has been around forever, no one wants to change. PPMs are glitchy, yes, but they're a different way to get surveys. MidGa, there's no perfect way to get ratings. The methods are VERY flawed, and if the stations know the "focus group", you can be sure that they'll pay a LOT more than five dollars to skew the numbers in their favor. If the terrestials are going to start plugging HD radio down our throats, and we have to shell out $500 plus to get a radio that picks up the signals, then them and Arbitron, and whoever else would step up to the plate and be reliable media research tool, should fork out a few dollars for better surveys. "We spend millions of dollars for research." Yeah, in a multi-BILLION dollar a year industry. That's like me saying I spend $12 on my $100K car for a brake job, so I hope it'll stop the next time I get in it.

Ladies & Gentlemen...

Some of you may NOT be aware of this, but here's the scoop on what we can and cannot do, as far as anything from Arbitron is concerned.

We can NOT post actual numbers (i.e., WKRP-4.2, up 0.8)

We can NOT post links (the URL) to ANY site that displays the Arbitron numbers.

We CAN post positions (i.e., WHOD-#3, Adults 25-54, up from #5)

We CAN post "THE NAME" (but no URL links) of a website containing actual Arbitron numbers (i.e., more info available from Radio & Records or All Access). This may be a gray area, but I think I'm correct about this one.

This is NOT a Radio-Info thing (well, it's now a rule), but rather an Arbitron thing. They told Radio-Info (in excruciatingly clear language) that, without Radio-Info paying a hefty license fee, Arbitron would be "very unhappy" if they discovered actual numbers (and or links to numbers) posted on this site. In so many words, Arbitron said that they would sue Radio-Info into oblivion, if their requests were not honored.

Your observation of ARBITRON'S wishes, is requested (and appreciated).
