Arbitron issues 'Black Radio Today' study for 2011

As you may have read in the latest Urban First newsletter, Arbitron has released its latest 'Black Radio Today' annual study for 2011, covering ratings trends and audience research amongst African-American radio listeners. The study uses Arbitron's own ratings plus information found by Scarborough Research, Arbitron's joint venture with The Nielsen Company. Some tidbits:

  • Radio's reach to Black consumers increased
  • Six of the 10 formats listed in the study saw growth in Black consumers with more than $75k in income
  • Urban AC is the most popular format amongst Black listeners for the fifth consecutive year
  • Listening by African-American men 35 and older increased
  • The number of teens listening to Urban Contemporary has actually decreased slightly, while the number of listeners over 35 as actually increased

You can download the entire report in PDF form at the Arbitron website for no charge (registration required): http://radio-info.us1.list-manage.c...82a795fa597872a8f1&id=43b1bd25b9&e=6ee525e206

Thats no surprise the Urban AC format has evolved. In most cities the 70's and 80's hits are being phased out and 90's and early 2000's Hip Hop and R&B hits are getting more play. Some Mainstream Urbans hardly touch those hits and with Clear Channel running those jukeboxes its dull than ever. Never thought the day I would hear the Thong Song on a Urban AC station. But Im glad the format is going strong in large cities in the midwest and south.

What Urban AC would play Sisqo's Thong Song ??? You forgot KJLH in Los Angeles, they've been focusing on currents & rap in the recent times. Not all the CC R&B/Mainstreams are dull. WWPR Power 105.1 in New York sounds better musically as so does WUSL Power 99 in Philly and KMEL in San Fransico. In the 90's and early 2000's alot R&B/Adult station spun current R&B, jazz crossovers and gospel crossovers slipped in a few rap tracks also. Times have changed, life goes on. Even KJLH had a Mainstream Urban format when Frankie Ross was PD and trying to chase after KKBT but failed big time. According to a October 22, 1994 billboard article KJLH played east coast rap group Ill Al Skract's smash hit I'll Take Her Featuring Brian Mc. Knight and became a Top 10 on KJLH (KJLH Rhythm 102.3) in 1994-95.

WFUN in St Louis played it Wednesday night. Since the relaunch that station sounds better than KMJM (clear channel) and WHHL (radio one). Clear Channel has ruined Urban radio. Most of them are ruuning the same Premunim Choice programming at night.

Mainstream Urban radio sucks right now. It's not Clear Channel, it's the music. It's just nor all that great right now. R&B is fine, but Hip-Hop needs to go in a new direction (which I think is finally starting to happen...about 2 years late)

CC didn't mess up KMEL 106 in San Fransico, WUSL Power 99 in Philly and WWPR Power 105.1 in NY. They messed KHHT Hot 92.3 by adding the 70's to the playlist and letting go Michelle Santusso in late 2003. IMHO KGGI still sounds better until this very day because they play alot of variety for a Rhythmic Contemporary. Need we go on this, I used listen KHHT alot when they were playing currents hits. I started listening in late October 2001 when they were going against KKBT with the Urban AC format with hip hop tracks on the playlist.

KHHT and KGGI shouldn't be mention in this post. They are not Urbans period. What KHHT is doing is fine right now. Clear Channel has a few good Urban stations in large dominant markets with african americans but the majority of them mainly in the south are horrbily program. As far as you going on with everything you repeat from past post I already know my facts just speaking my opinion. Everybody is entitled to their own. Moving on. Im just refering to Urban AC stations accross the country updating their playlist and playing music from my generation.

Skim the report again--KGGI belongs, as it covers Rhythmic CHRs (national audience 28% Black).

The study didn't do extensive examination on Rhythmic AC listening (like at a KHHT), but noted on page 10 that Black listeners make up 1.2% of its national audience.

You're right, just because KGGI plays R&B/Hip Hop doesn't make it an "urban". I know that KHHT should be pulling in some numbers because they play R&B that white, asian and hispanics like. You should expect the south to have crappy urban stations especially in the rual areas.

BTW what Urban AC besides KJLH is giving the 90's & Early 2000's hits mad spins? IMHO I was born in the wrong generation. I wish I was old enough to enjoy urban radio in the 90's. Why was I born in 1993 instead of 1983 LOL :D but you told me to enjoy my youth.

@wdb2003 Correction I wish I was born in 1983 instead of 1993. Made a mistake on my last post. Forgive me for my errors.
