Arbitron Ratings: WBZ Now Third

Red Sox...WEEI was #1 for awhile last yr at this time IIRC. Now, 'RKO (and 'EEI) aren't #1
now, but 'BZ fell out of the position perhaps due in part to Sox games.

WBZ's been asleep at the switch for a long time. Audience too elderly.

These ratings are 12+. I haven't seen the 25-54, but I wouldn't be surprised if WBZ is still on top there.

I would be surprised. WBZ demographics are mostly 55+.

I expect them to do WORSE in 25-54's.

Congratulations to Cadillac Jack, Chris Tyler and the rest of the staffers for programming the #1 AND #2 stations 12+ in Boston.

Has this feat ever been accomplished before in any market?

I don't have the numbers, but it's possible Kiss 108 is #1 25-54. Almost certainly in women 25-54. JAM'N does surprisingly well in that demographic too. Hip Hop will be here for awhile.

Given that in the fall, the rankings for 25-54 were as follows:

#1 WODS (Xmas in Nov-Dec)
#2 WXKS-FM, WMJX, WEEI-AM (3-way tie)
#5 WJMN

plus, Oldies was slightly ahead of Kiss 12+ and Magic and WEEI were closer to Kiss 12+ than now, it is highly likely that Kiss is indeed #1 25-54. Pop music is in a really great cycle right now, Kiss sounds tight (with the exception of that awful VTing), and Matty rules mornings in Boston. So it shouldn't really be terribly shocking. Job well done.

Kiss and Jam'n must be light years ahead of anyone in 18-34...

HIP HOP IS TOP 40 these days...Matty will rule mornings in Boston until he dies....A great podcast on the JAMN website of Matty stopping by the Ramiro and Pebbles Show.

Whenever I heard Gil Santos waxing enthusiastically about Purina Cat Chow...for a MINUTE!!!--I knew that WBZ had sold its soul to the commercial gods. I realize that drive time is the time to make hay, but WBZ just bludgeons people with commercials...and STUPID ONES (recall the idiotic pet cemetery spots?).

New England may be 'SOOOLLLLLLLDDDDD' on WBZ, but not with these numbers.

While on the topic of WBZ, I recall seeing some recent 12+ cume numbers that had KISS at #1 (and I believe that has been true for a while)...yet WBZ still says "New England's most listened to radio station". Is there some angle that I am missing that makes this statement true?

with 50,000 watts pumped out on a clear channel, they can couch the numbers to suit their fancy. It's what they do.

Yes, "New England's most listened to radio station" does not mean "most listened to in the Boston market". WBZ has listeners in many other areas of New England other than only within the Boston market. They still show up in many different books in New Hampshire, southern Maine, Rhode Island, and others. Adding all those listeners in parts of New England outside of the Boston market to those within the market, their claim still may be possible.

With all of the rock and gold based stations in Boston fragmenting each other, it's no surprise that the two most contemporary stations rise to the top. I'm surprised no one has flipped to a young end format recently. As others have mentioned, even hip hop attracts 25-54 these days. The younger half of that demo grew up listening to it.

Got ratings? If you're interested in 25-54...here it is:

1. WMJX 7.3
2. WXKS-FM 6.1
3. WEEI 5.7
4. WJMN 5.4
5. WZLX 5.3

WBZ is 11th 25-54 (3.0)

In cume the top 5 12+ are Kiss, WBZ, Jam'n, Magic and Oldies. 25-54 it's Kiss, Magic, WBZ, Mix, Mike.
