Are any of your stations pre-empting network New Years coverage for local garbage?

Philadelphia's NBC 10 broadcasting the stupid local fireworks show instead of the NBC network New Year's Eve With Carson Daly.
Wait, they are airing it, but only half of it and an hour later when it will be rather lame!
This kind of crap is why I wish I could get a whole other set of network affiliates, so when one pulls this kind of garbage, like ABC 6 did with football earlier this year, I can watch the real network program!

Is this garbage going on were you are?

From what I hear, WXIA/11 Atlanta is pre-empting
Carson Daly's special for the dropping of the big
peach in downtown Atlanta.

Carson Daly? Showing the local fireworks without interruption would be more compelling than Carson Daly.

It seems that as every year passes, New Year's Eve becomes less and less important. In the 80s, every network had a NY special on. Last year it was ABC alone. For seven days between Christmas and New Year's, I wonder if anyone is actually at these stations and networks. It's all "year end" clip shows and temps.

The New Year's specials these days are little more than promotions for the year's "hottest" pop sensation. I tune in only to see if Dick Clark has been replaced by an android.

Local garbage?!?!?! I would far rather see a local New Years broadcast than the trash from New York. I would think that viewers would prefer the local one anyways...none of the trashy pop performers that nobody will care about tomorrow and nobody cared about yesterday.

I am a personal supporter of stations having the choice to schedule network programming the way they want, including pre-emptions where warranted - the viewers sometimes prefer something different than a network offering. Up here stations don't have any leeway, because networks believe in having no local differences whatsoever, and because of that the playing field is levelled so that Toronto has very limited local programming for its size, while some small markets have more than enough (such as Regina). This has meant that no station in Toronto has a 5 PM newscast (unlike most American markets), because it is more important for Dr. Phil to be seen in Toronto at the same time as all the other CTV stations than for CFTO to gain ratings at 5. (I thought I heard that WBZ is moving Dr. Phil to 3 PM in early 2006, which is apparently where CTV gets its signal for a simsub on Bell Expressvu - so that might change things.)

Then again, in the States your networks really are part-time compared to in Canada, which means that there are serious issues with non-O&O stations not showing the full network schedule - the network schedule is simply too large and any local deviation for even one syndicated program means pre-emptions. Canadian networks are almost 24/7 with just a couple of hours a day for the local stations to do what they want (usually a newscast).<P ID="signature">______________

Thanks to the football schedule, I was lucky enough to watch the local New Years celebration on the news. The Giants game bumped things up so that WPIX could show the Times Square ball drop as part of their delayed 10PM newscast. It was nice as they had the natural sound, no prattling by stupid hosts. It was quite nice. Then the reporter threw back to the studio, the anchors threw it to Lolita Lopez who previewed sports, then break.

That may happen next year.
I may watch ABC if they would fire Seacrest out of a cannon into the East River.

Yes, it's true. WBZ-4 here in Boston will move "Dr. Phil" to 3 P.M. EST/EDT as of January 9th, and will expand the station's early-evening local news block from 90 minutes (4-5 P.M. and again from 6-6:30 P.M.) to two and a half hours (4 to 6:30 P.M.) at that time.

Re: Are any of your stations pre-empting network New Years coverage for local garbage?

WBZ-4 here in Boston broadcast live coverage of the city's "First Night" celebrations after the station's late local news.

However, WBZ is a CBS-owned station, and tonight (December 31st), CBS did not have any late-night programming. Therefore, WBZ did not have to bump any network programming.
