Are HD radios on Ebay a sign of failure ?

This ugly clunker has 15 bids, and the latest bid is only for $76.00 !

"This item is brand new. I won it at work and don't really need it. I've never even taken it out of the box. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions."

EAAAAASY there '700 ;) The BA Recepter isn't "ugly" (and I love the original mono version)... The BA HD Receptor just isn't worth $76!

Let's see... 15 bids? I wonder if they all work for CC, and missed out on their special employee HD radio discount coupons from iBiquity?

ATTENTION eBay bidders... C Crane makes a good FM dipole... and it's not 7-feet across... MANDATORY accessory!

You've apparently never sold anything on eBay.

$81 (up to now) with four days and change left on the auction is pretty good. There's clearly interest in the radio, and anyone who's sold something on eBay knows that the bidding ramps up near the very end.

I'm not saying this guy/gal will make a killing on it, or that it's guaranteed to even reach near the $299 list price, but the price/time left combination would make ME happy if I was selling it.

We'll see - I'll keep a running count of HD radios up for auction, ok ? :D

The answer to the title question is a resounding YES!
People refuse to try HD Radio even if given the HD radios for free. That says it all.
Even free is too high a price to pay for this less then worthless, destructive technology.

Yeah, such a failure that the thing is *already* to $137 just over 12 hours after I posted my last message. With about three days and change to go on the auction!

I don't know where you learned your economics, but $137 is much more than "free".

:)

The party selling the HD radio, won it free from his employer, and did not even bother to try HD. He did not pay $137 for the radio. He got it free.
People overbid at auctions all the time. What's news about that?

Oh, I didn't see what you were talking about. Well, one person's disinterest in keeping a free radio of any sort is...one person's disinterest. You have no idea why they put the thing up for auction. Maybe they were hoping to, umm, I don't know, make some money? :D

When the OP is pointing to an allegedly low price for a radio, which increases $60 in less than one day after the original post with three days left in the auction, that's why I point that out.

You can't have it both ways.

What both ways?
The winner got the radio free, did not even bother to try it out, and is selling it. If he was even slightly interested, he could have tried it out and still sold the HD radio. He had no interest in even trying HD radio, even when the HD radio is given for free. Why would trying the HD radio preclude him from selling it on e-bay?
What do auction overbidders have to do with that?
People have overbid at auctions for centuries, and do so regularly on e-bay.
How are the two statements contradictory, or do you just want to see them that way?

I can understand a person wishing to sell a "door prize" if it is unneeded... Possibly that party desires some holiday spending money. Heck, I once won one of those awful portable AM/FM/WX/B&W-TV/flashlight/siren combos sold during the holidays in the aisles of large department stores for $50. I never took that couple-pounds of crap out of its box. Maybe I should sell it on eBay--but I doubt ANYONE would want it!

Check out this link to Mercury Research "Radio's Perceptual Specialist" and view the Flash presentation radio broadcasters had to endure at the last NAB convention.

A few minutes in, you'll see the that Mecury's survey concludes that many would not appreciate an HD radio if given to them at no cost. The percentages vary by age and "listener type"--but are generally very dismal.

We may be witnessing an example of that here.

Whoa, here, one is making a leap by statements like "people refuse to try it, even for free"!

ONE person.

ONE auction.

That one person is indicative of the entire nation? :D

As for the study, interesting. Now, we're getting a little closer to light vs. heat. But I've said all along that, for example, $499 HD Radios (which are the "high" price point in that study) are ridiculous if you're talking about mass acceptance. Or, even the $200-300 range that we've seen recently.

If this thing is gonna fly at all, it's going to be when "HD Radios" are the standard kind of radio sold in every car as "radio", and available for current radio prices in non-car versions. We're years away from that. I'll fully agree that most people won't pay a major premium for the thing right now, or even a minor premium. The research isn't telling me anything I didn't know already.

I also fully agree with the "myth" slide in that presentation. I don't believe the new digital format will "save" radio anymore than HDTV will "save" broadcast TV.

But to point at one eBay auction of one radio and say "Haha, it's failing, no one even wants this thing for free!" is ridiculous.

The auction was but one example of public apathy toward HD radio. No one but you, erroneously claimed it was the only example.

You know, I am getting really tired of being what looks like a cheerleader for HD. Because I'm NOT. But WAKE UP!!

Someone auctioning off a door prize on EBAY does not show people won't try IBOC any more than a Radio Station prize winner selling off that ATV thay won means that Honda is doomed.

Actually that "Content" presentation should be required viewing for EVERYONE who works in radio.

HD will not save radio. Multi channels MIGHT be an interesting twist, though.

Aside from radio-geeks, the general public is not going to tolerate having to set up dipole (with some having to mount them 20' in the air, or in the attic/roof-top) and loop antennas, just to get more of the same terrestrial radio, and to think otherwise, is ridiculous. I'm sure, the gentleman's reaction to seeing the antennas was, "you have to be kidding !". When I can go out and spend $10 on an excellent Sony ICF-S10MK2 portable AM/FM radio, what incentive is there to spend $200 on an ugly, clunky HD Radio that requires an elaborate setup and is non-portable. Aside from that, I still don't understand how the HD Radio business-model is ever going to work.
