Are KATM & KHKK Untouchable?

Citadel's Kat Country 103 & 104.1 The Hawk are pretty strong stations. Competitors have come and gone. I am curious, Is it possible any station could try to compete against these two powerhouses, or are they literally untouchable?

Yes, I think so KHKK/KDJK do very well and always have even back in the 80s when 104.1 was KHOP, and 95.1 was KDJK. and no station wants to compete with Kat Country, look at what was KNAH 106.3 in Merced they gave up on that one and 97.1 (mention on another thread) isn't going to try. We can add the Current 95.1 KHOP to that as well.

The signals are very strong!I was driving on I-5 near Shasta Lake recently (about 40 miles north of Redding and was picking up The Hawk and KAT with little static on the car radio

But KNAH is in a different market. KNAH's main competition was Merced Country Powerhouse, KUBB-96.3, not KATM. Heck, KUBB even beat KATM in the Merced ratings.

Yes, I think so KHKK/KDJK do very well and always have even back in the 80s when 104.1 was KHOP, and 95.1 was KDJK.
Back in the 80's, KHOP-104.1 was CHR/Top 40. KDJK-95.1 signed on the air on March 11, 1985. They were AOR. KDJK's main competition at that time was KFIV-102.3 which was AOR from about 1981-86. KDJK ruled the roost for most of the latter part of the 80's. In 1989, then CHR/Rhythmic KIZS-96.7 changed formats to Classic Rock (and calls to KVFX-96.7 The Fox). The Fox began to chip away at KDJK's ratings but it was the format change of KHOP-104.1 to AOR on November 2, 1992, that the slaughter began. Financial problems with the owners of KDJK forced them to go bankrupt and the new owners changed the format to Alternative Rock on December 2, 1994. In 1996, Citadel purchased KDJK and on April 23, 1996, KHOP's Rock format moved from 104.1 to 95.1 while 104.1 stunted with an All Elvis Format until April 29 at 6:pM then they switched to Classic Hits as "ARROW 104.1". On August 5 of that same year, KROW-104.1 became 104.1 The Hawk. The format remained the same.

On August 17, 1997, vandals toppled KVFX's transmitter and The Fox went off the air. They returned to the air in October but as Country, KFRY-Froggy 96.7. On November 29, 2000, KHOP-95.1 dropped Rock in favor of "80's Hits" as Planet 95. The following day, Bob & Tom moved over to 104.1 The Hawk, and the format was finetuned from Classic Hits to Classic rock. And the 80's remained on KHOP-95.1 until August of 2002 when they switched to its current CHR/Top 40 format.

I Remember it well, what I remember is in 1995, 103.9 had the KROW call letters and 104.1 was KHOP with a AOR format, and at that time KDJK 95.1 was Modern Rock owned by Mondospere, same company that owned KFRR 104.1 in Fresno that was also Modern rock.

Back in 1985 KDJK 95.1 started off as a sister station to KKDJ 105.9 Fresno and Simulcasted for 3 weeks, right off hand I don't remember the owners name , but some of the DJs from KKDJ went to KDJK, one was Jeff Ridel.

Back then I had no problems picking up 103.9 and 95.1 in Clovis, but between the HD of 103.7 KRZR and with 95.1 moving to the Knights Ferry site and 94.9s HD they are both very hard to get.

The reason that KUBB beat KATM's in ratings is that 96.3 KUBB has very good signal coverage....north of Lodi to south into Tulare county. If you have more coverage, you generate more listeners and that brings better ratings. 106.3 KNAH signal...... forgetaboutit.

Both 103.3 and 104.1 have amazing transmitter sites. They're somewhat unique in that their HAAT is only 500 feet above average terrain, yet they're well over 1000 feet above the valley floor. As a result, they don't have to de-rate their power due to height. The area where the signal suffers is to the South & West, outside the market. Here's their "predicted" coverage, which in this case is fairly accurate for the majority of the listeners:

and

What these maps don't tell you is that there's 50,000 watts pretty much line-of-sight with any radio in the market. In the late 80's/early 90's I worked for a subcarrier provider and we leased 103.3. Even to portable hand-held units the penetration was killer.
