Are there any local stations left?

Are there any local stations left? Radio, as an industry, is becoming too generic. I travel quite a bit throughout the Northeast and am hearing less and less local, live radio. Can't really get a feel for things happening in the area listening to the Franks, Mikes, Alices, Hawks and Wolves of the world.

WXXS?

> WIRY Plattsburgh NY - AM 1340 THE GREAT ENTERTAINER!

This station is a classic. It's a tiny AM full service still playing music (MAYBE RECORDS!). Mostly oldies but you'll hear some country and maybe a pop tune. They still have a live overnight jock doing the request show. They stream at www.wiry.com. Check out the site and studio photos nothing's changed in 40 years. It's kinda cool a few of these stations are still around.

Come to Downeast Maine and hear radio the way it used to be - and should still be. :)

I don't know if by "local" you mean ONE person own a station(s) and lives there but here are a few in the Burlington, VT. market.

106.7-FM WIZN
99.9-FM WBTZ
95.5-FM WXXX
620-AM WVMT
98.9 WOKO
105.1 WKOL
1230-AM WJOY

The last 3 on that list are owned by Hall Communications, which is based in Florida and owns stations all over the East Coast.

True. Depends on your definition of "local"... Not Clear Channel? Not voicetracked? Local talent?

Got to hand it to Gordon Humphries. He has managed to create a truly local outlet. No syndicated programming at all! All local talk. How many stations, even in large markets, can claim that! And they are doing it on a 1kw local channel AM!

Are they making money? I doubt it. But their goal seems to be break-even. Service to the community actually trumps the almighty dollar for once.

They are co-owned with WTSN AM 1270 and that's the whole company so I guess that would be local

How about WKTJ FM 99.3 in Farmington Maine?

Also Gleason Group in Norway Maine owns WOXO Norway,WTBM Mexico,WTME Rumford,WKTQ South Paris and WCNM Lewiston.

WKIT 100.3 - Bangor, ME
WZON AM 620 - Bangor, ME
WDME 103.1 - Dover Foxcroft, Maine
All owned by Steven King - can't get more local than that!

There are also 2 more AM stations (I forget the calls) in Bangor owned by a local guy - AM 1340 and AM 1400. Plus, the recent purchase of the Winter Harbor station by Mark Osborne.

***The AM stations in Bangor are hardly live and local. They may be locally owned but the programming seems to be strictly off the Bird. Aside from local weather I've never heard anything but CNN News on AM 1340 and AM 1400 appears to be Neo Conservative syndicated talk programming with the local weather thrown in. Not sure if they have a live morning show because the station is too weak to hear at my home and I have not been near its signal during the morning drive time.

WABI AM 910 does have Geore Hale in the morning but he's now paired with a former news anchor in the market and the show ends at 9 AM instead of 10 AM. More emphasis on talk and interviews with the music now taking over at the end of his show. This appears to be the only AM station in the market with any local programming.

Ooooh, don't forget WDEA in Ellsworth, Maine! AM 1370 w/5,000 watts? Rick Foster is on week-days 6-9 AM with a very entertaining morning show.

***Yep. I can't hear that one up here where I live unless I use my C Crane radio with Select a Tenna out in the yard. But inside my home AM signals get wiped out for some reason and I cannot find the problem.

WABI is owned by Clear Channel, therefore not locally owned. As for local AM programming, WZON AM620 has a live, locally produced morning and afternoon show.

Yup...I agree. AM stations I mentioned are not live or local. They do simulcast the ABC affiliate newscasts, but that's as local as they get. By "local" stations, do we mean ownership (which is what I thought), programming or both? If it's strictly programming, there are plenty of live and local stations in the market. If it's ownership AND programming, it does narrow things a bit.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say "service to the community"...I doubt they have much of an audience...some of the stuff they air is pretty unlistenable. Still, you've got to hand it to him for trying. If he can afford to subsidize it, good for him.

WTSA in Brattleboro is the last of a breed in several ways and features Tim Johnson, the last standing radio newsman in southern Vermont.
