Are WGTM & WVOT4sale?

Both the old girls need a new lease on life! How many religious stations, with 4 , does 1 market need like Wilson?

Wilson is a majority-minority city, so a black-oriented format makes sense. But I agree, all 4 should not have essentially the same format. I understand WVOT... a church owns it, so what else would (or could) they do with it? Similarly, WUBN is owned by a group headed by a preacher. WLLY is probably religious simply because churches and ministries buy blocks of time, therefore it's relatively easy money. WGTM would be a good clean slate for somebody with a deep wallet and strong stomach. Rebuild it from scratch with a adult-focused urban format and some edgy conversation of interest to the community and I think you'd have a contender. Of course, it's easy for me to say that... it ain't my money!

That 4 tower array would need a lot of work. I doubt if there is much ground system left. I would like to see what the diff would be from wet to dry with a bridge. It STILL radiates well even with all the problems. I can pick it up as far as Havelock, but not well. It does have a better Transmitter than the old Visual, It now has a 10kw Continental that has been modified to 5kw, the final should last a while. I would like to see just how well that thing would do with a little TLC. Wonder if they still have that McMartin console?

Good points made, let me add that WLLY may eventually turn into a hispanic station, since the owner would like to do so. But he made a verbal promise with the remaining staff of WLLY that as long as the GM and the other worker were there, he would not change it. Well, we all know the GM passed away a few years ago (Mr. Wallace Bullock) and the lone employee there was given a co-manager position. As long as she is there, the station may stay religious, but they are not making a lot of money, it's that just the costs for running the station is so low, and the employees don't make much money at all.

WGTM also used to have some kinda talk show, I think it was called the Red Hot something, can't remember, but it was very risque. It's one thing to have a talk show, but there are still morals and sincerity issues a person talking ought to know, especially since they are supposed to be religious. From the one or two shows I heard, I wondered how they didn't get sued for some of the things they barked out. Nevertheless, I don't know if they do that anymore. The idea of a talk show for Wilson is a great idea, if tempered well enought with respect and a determination to help the community. Somehow I didn't hear that with the WGTM talk show.

I was offered WVOT back in 1997-1998 somewhere in that time period, when Al Taylor was GM. He wanted $150,000 for it. If I had the magic bullet for the station I would have bought it. I knew back then Wilson does not support Wilson radio. It is a shame too. WVOT was a great station.
