Are WLW Ego's that big?

I'm not a radio guy (anymore and havent been since 1993), but are the ego's at WLW that big to think that people will actually buy a t-shirt with the show host's picture on it? (Im well aware of the image and the mockery of the President of the United States) I know they break their arms patting themselves on the back and their mouths are drier than a dead persons skin with their condesending remarks and arogance on their shows, but why would they think anyone would buy a t-shirt with a talk show host's picture? (big time run on sentence)

I dont see any folks on the streets with Rush or Hannity t-shirts in Cincy or other cities. Who thought of this and really, dont ya think the one's that didnt sell (probably 98% of them) would end up in the junk prize/promotion closet just to be given away at on-site promotion events (would make a good shop rag) or Goodwill? Maybe McConnell will help clothe the needy at the Goodwill with his since he's such the charitable type? Willie's might be used to scare Al-Quida into giving up on the location of Bin-Laden with his mug (definatly (<--spelling error?) the face for radio). I can only imagine the t-shirt shop saying "OK, we'll do it, but I dont think they'll sell at $20.00ea. Oh, btw we have to have cash up front!"

your thoughts?

Who's picture is on the shirt? Willie's? Sounds like his ego is further out of control than I thought. I don't mind wearing T-Shirts that feature a station's logo on it, but I wouldn't go around wearing one with Willie or McConnell's picture on it. Man, "The Big One" sure isn't what it once was. :'(

Sure, some people will buy them for whatever reason.

I have long seen people put bumper stickers on their cars for their favorite station including some of the big green frog for WEBN.

Not my style but it is for some fans.

From where i sit, it seems like there is more "ego" and "arrogance" in this market then many other larger ones.
I don't know why. You'd think that Radio was invented here and every other market is second rate. The "Radio Sun" rises and sets here.
I could be totally wrong on this and if i am, i'd be happy for someone to call me out on my opinion.

Not only is there ego and arrongance in this market, but also Dayton,Columbus and Lima. ...even in small town stations,it's there also!... and have been for decades....perhaps all small town station managers wanted to be like John Murphy (drum roll/salute) who headed up Avco's WLW and WLWT in the late 60s....I remember trying to apply for an on-air position at WIZE in 1981. When I applied there I asked the receptioninst "where is Steve Joos?" I was told that he moved on to Columbus.. The new manager there talked down to me,downplayed my audition tape and was told to get out of the business. What a jerk...so where is HE now??? Just goes to show that there are big fish in a small pond everywhere...and what goes around COMES around....and what about WIZE today? The studio is vacant since WULM moved out last year and WIZE is now a drop in the bucket since becoming a WONE simulcast. Rash Limberburgher,Jean Hammerty and Glenn Bicker have the same egos and arrogance as well.

I dont personally have any issue with WLW, but the 'EGO's' of the talk show hosts are outrageous. I have too seen many many bumper stickers - t- shirts - hats with station logos, but never have I seen the actual talk show hosts picture as the 'pitch' on a t-shirt (and at $20.00ea, I'm sure they wont sell 20-30 of each!). Another promo faux-pau!

You're gonna find egos anywhere in most any career. I remember back when I was trying to get into radio right out of college 10 years ago next month (ended up going the newspaper route instead), I had an interview here in Columbus at a station and the revered program director (or op mgr, can't remember which) - who to his credit is extremely good at what he does and I believe at one time was a poster on this board - asked me during the interview "So what do you want to do when you grow up?" with perhaps the most condescending attitude I'd ever been given by anyone. Turned me off instantly to ever working for him.
Considering what radio has become, I'm glad I went the way I did.
Point is, you'll bump into it anywhere. I don't think WLW is necessarily any worse than anyplace else.

Does WLW still have that ID calling themselves "The Nation's Station" everyday at noon?

That brings to mind another question.
Which one of these clear channel allocations has the largest coverage area, day and night? I am sure the one that is lowest on the dial will be near the top but soil conductivity and tower heights has something to do with it.

There have been threads on the DX board about it. I think the consensus was about a tie between WLW and KOA. The Chicago clears seem not to get out the way they used to.

The biggest daytime coverage areas don't belong to any class A clears, believe it or not. The beyond-amazing ground conductivity of the northern Plains gives stations such as KFYR 550 Bismarck and WNAX 570 Yankton coverage that WLW or WGN or WABC could only dream of.

CBK 540 in Saskatchewan is the North American champion, with 50 kW and a tall tower right there in the fertile loam of the Canadian midwest. I'm pretty sure KFYR, with just 5 kW, is next.

Glad you stepped in and answered this, Scott!
