are wokk and miss 101 the same station?

It's me again folks! Haven't posted anything in a while about Meridian radio, but I guess it's time I ask the question.why do wokk and miss 101 sound so much alike? Is okk copying miss 101 or is miss 101 copying okk?The reason I am asking is because I haven't been having to go out of town as much and have been listening to both stations on my way to work.Is this some kind of radio strategy or do the people in charge of both stations only know one way of doing things.some one please let me know!

WOKK has been " THE " country station in the Meridian market for a long time , and has done an excellent job with it . Of course , this does not set well with the Clear Channel group . Since Clear Channel does not know JACK about programming a radio station , they always copy the other guy !!!!! That is why the two stations sound so much alike .

They do sound freakishly alike, same country music, same "today's best Country" same no talk triple plays, same lunch for the office bunch, same Budweiser at five. Wonder who is copying who? Nobody knows anymore.

Jay, why do you keep asking the same question on different threads? It is obvious if you are listening to both stations that someone is copying someone. What is your gripe? TRP fired the PD for what they said was bad programming, so you take what you know and start a new station. So who is copying who?

The former PD of WOKK it seems, put in place all of the things he knows about radio at Miss 101. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. A crossover on radio promotions is inevitable, therefore making them sound alot alike. The djs all sound different with different shows though.. Miss 101 isn't offering anything new that I've heard in the promotion department and WOKK is still doing what they've always done in the way of radio promotions. WOKK still has Paul Harvey and Jimmy Carter. Miss 101 carries the WTOK news. There are a few differences in that regard but otherwise which came first...the chicken or the egg?

Scanman...sounds to me like you were dumped by Clear Channel; or even worse: you've never worked for them...which makes your assessment unfair. My experience with Clear Channel has been great. They have more resources at their disposal than any other radio organization. Problems arise because CC discovers what is successful in one market, then introduces it to other markets. That's why stations sound the same all over the country. However, as we all know, all markets are not the same. That statement certainly applies to Meridian.
Another issue CC has is that there are W-A-Y too many cooks in the kitchen...brand managers, consultants, etc, etc.
My point is that, in reality, Miss 101 should have the creative advantage over OKK; considering the large amount of help that is available to come up with inventive promotions (or at least 'steal' them from other CC stations).
But, like the previous poster, this potential individuality is not showing up. Now is the time for Miss 101 to come up with their own strong identity.

Personally, I felt bad when I heard that Miss 101's hunting contest had to change its name. That's a shame. But did they really think they could get away with it? Seems like someone did not put too much thought into that one. However, they did spin it nicely. They made OKK seem like pricks for threatening to sue.

When all is said and done, these stations DO sound a great deal alike. What's more, they are both sounding okay. But from the listeners' standpoint, there will be a great deal of confusion when it's time for them to fill out the diaries. With that said, Miss 101 must do something to stand out or OKK will stay on top, even if it's only by default.

Justpayin I thought that cc's big standout was supposed to be the Scotty Ray and Debbie show or maybe I should say the Scotty Ray and Debbie station because that's what it sounds like to me. I don't have a beef with the morning duo but it's sounds like cc is banking on them to do it all for the radio station. They ARE cc's big draw..right? Are you saying they need new talent or new promotions? What are you saying exactly?

Definitely NOT.
The MISS 101 launch was planned prior to Scotty Ray & Debbie going to CC.
WOKK, playing the "defense" strategy, is mirroring everything MISS 101 does. Not necessarily a bad move on their part, if they intend to confuse the audience and take credit for "all things country" in the market. Only time will tell. CC is banking on the longstanding success of the former WOKK morning show to bring in the listeners. Too early to have a full book to look at, but if the sponsor "noise" is any indication, it is working! ;)

A Big Buck Bounty Is like Talent contest. Legally it would have never held up in court. Budweiser was the originator of the Big Buck Bounty in this area. Then they hooked up with WOKK. WOKK pissed them off and Bud dropped it. They are now a sponsor on the MISS101 contest.
Talent contest... big buck bounty , the name changes if you add a word before or after it. It was a stupid move on WOKK's part. I guess Big Larry did not think about it being read on the Radio. He has missed the big picture on big buck bounty. It is not a listener driver. Once you know about it you don't have to listen anymore. It is a bonus community event.
WOKK does not need MISS101 to make them seem like pricks. They do fine on their own.

I agree with you that CC is putting too many eggs in the scotty ray and debbie basket. But by no means am I saying that new talent is needed. We all know how difficult it is to find quality talent that will stay. What I am saying is that from my experience, talent alone does not make a station great. There must be more. I've known of a market that had a similar situation: successful country station; competing country station starts up and steals all of the first station's talent. But when the first book came back, the original station was still on top. People get into a routine of listening to the same thing every day. We are creatures of habit.

As much as I love my on-air job, I know that jocks don't make or break a station. I've worked for stations that were number one, and I've worked for a station that was number 25 in a market. My level of talent has been the same; but either a station is good or it is not; either it is listened to or it is not.

So if the jocks don't make the difference what does? This is where (obviously) OKK will have the advantage. They are ingrained into the minds of listeners in that part of the state. Listeners could be hearing Miss 101, but write down OKK because they might think that's what they are listening to (out of habit). Definitely being a heritage station is of mass importance.

On the other side of the coin, there IS hope for Miss 101 down the road. They must come up with creative promotions (mentioned in my previous post) that draw listeners in. The November concert is a step in the right direction. They must also get back to a grass roots type of marketing. They need to be all over town all the time. They need to have hundreds of T-shirts and other station items to pass out (really DOES help).
They also need someone LIVE AND LOCAL on at night. I know budgets are tight, but here is a chance to drop kick OKK. They need to be all over TV and newspaper every day while the book is going on.

I know none of what I am saying is new or revolutionary, here it is nevertheless. Plus, I am quite enjoying viewing this struggle for power from a distance. And if I can add a little fuel to the fire, so be it.

You and others get to use the word prick but my post asking you about radio promotions seems to have disappeared. No matter....can you list some RADIO promotions that you would consider effective? Do you think Miss 101 is out in the community sufficiently?

Forgot...my apologies to Radiogal and the forum if my post was offensive in some way. I'm not sure how it was but it must have been. No harm was intended.

I usually receive financial compensation for my consultations. Since I see that my observations are not welcomed, I'll keep my promotional ideas to myself. As I mentioned before, Clear Channel has many people on payroll who can assist with the situation.
Btw, the station I worked with that was 25th was in a top five market. Currently, my station is number one and has been for 25 years. I'm not just blowing hot air. I have been around a while.

Was there an offensive post. If so I missed it. Did you say a dirty word?????? What happened?????????????????????

I respect your opinion. Please tell me of some of the promotions. Isn't that the reason this board exists? To help your fellow jock?If you have a top rated station for 25 years and you can listen to Meridian radio. Is it MISS103?
