are you all seriously pleased with SA radio?

I've been reading some past posts as far back as June with complaints about some of our stations in terms of radio personalities, and lack of variety. Did everyone just give up or what?

I don't listen much to local radio anymore. Radio in San Antonio has been boring ever since 106.7 Jamz and 102.7 KTFM went in different directions. Jack is okay but there's too much Rock to leave it set on that station. Jammin 94.1 is flat out depressing. Z106.7 and Mix 96.1 lack in variety. Right now, 98.5 The Beat is probably the best station San Antonio has.

These guys all remind me of Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons.

"Worst radio EVER!"

The question I still ask is of everyone is if XM, Sirius, IPODS, Internet, your grandma's dog yodeling Dance or whatever is so much better, why are you still here EVERY DAY bitching about it?

Yes, I know that's what forums are for. It is also your God given right as an American to state your opinion, but geez, with all the time people waste here griping about a medium they have supposedly abandoned due to a percieved lack of quality and a lack of catering to their narrow personal tastes, couldn't they be shopping ITUNES or listening to Dance or Albanian Goat Roping Music or whatever on XM?

And you may ask, why do I waste my time reading this stuff every day? Anusement, pure amusement.
Edited by trafficboy on 03/21/06 12:20 PM.

Ummm ok....Now back to San Antonio/Austin Radio

Unfortunatly this isn't a yes or no answer. There are good points and bad. on the good side we have the best oldies station in the country. KISS is a top notch Active rocker and KJ97 sets the standard for country music. The Outlaw is bold and daring and most of all DIFFERENT! WOAI is a mediocre talk station but they have a news staff that actually "breaks" the news. The Beat is above average for Hip Hop.
Then there's Jack. Nice, but everybody has a Jack or Bob or Dave or... well, you get the point.
On the down side when Jammin started out it was the kind of station you could listen to and say "WOW, I haven't heard that song in years!" Now it's "Gee I just heard that, AGAIN." Shrinking playlists are the wrong direction. Magic is old and tired. While Mix is improving somewhat, there is absolutly no reason for Z106.7 to even exist. This market needs two things. Jazz and solid non Active alternative.

I think that the best chance for this market is the HD-2s. More variety might spark some originallity in the analog signals. At least I hope it works that way.

So what was the story when 106.7 was jazz a few years back?

I don't know that I'd be "pleased" with any market's radio. I crave variety and do a lot of sampling. I probably reassign a button or two on my car radio every month, that's how disloyal I am.

With the notable exception of variety hits, most of the formats out there grow tiresome after a while because they're so narrow. In general, the music stations have playlists that are too small and too focused for long-term listening. The talk stations swing too far in one political direction or the other and the talkers behind the microphone feel like one-trick ponies after you hear them a few times.

Since I don't speak Spanish and didn't grow up with music from south of the border, I have little interest in the stations playing those formats. I know some people on this board in my shoes would probably call those Spanish-language stations a "waste of a signal," but I'm not so presumptuous. I accept that those stations have an audience and I'm not part of it. (It's not so different from when I lived in Tennessee and country music was dominant on the FM dial, except that country stations broadcast in my native language. None of those country stations ever got a button on my car radio, either.) We should all aknowledge that their necessary presence in the market makes it more difficult to fit in everyone's favorite format.

I'd probably dig the variety of formats on satellite radio, but I don't like the idea of using clumsy add-on equipment and paying $10+/month for it. If it was under $100/year, I might consider it.

I guess my dream would be to have my car radio bring in all of the stations from another market for a day, with a nightly change of markets. That way, every day would be a surprise and in the end, we'd probably decide that things were better when they were boring.

Lack of listeners and advertisers. If you want to listen to Jazz in San Antonio tune to 91.7.

I may be going to XM radio, my stereo equipment got burnned out sunday night, I think this would be the cheapest and easest way for me to go.

At least KRTU's still at it. I used to be in charge of the Jazz programming at KSYM almost 20 years ago and it looks like that library was retired a while back.

So with a lack of listeners and advertisers, what would make one think that it's a viable format on the commercial end of the dial? David Munoz has been doing Sunday Morning Jazz since he was at KMIX and it's alright for how ever long the show is now (used to be 4 hours if I remember correctly), but soft jazz as an entire format obviously doesn't fly well. Well, my wife would listen to it all the time, but that's just her. :)

Hey jras20, if you decide on a satallite you might want to go with Sirius especially if you like dance music.

This is why putting Jazz or an Alternative on a HD-2 signal would make sense. You mentioned David Munoz, Smooth Jazz would be an excellent HD-2 companion to KQXT. A deep Album Alternative would fit perfectly with KISS-FM. Not alot of listeners at first but if we had these formats and others available I would buy a HD radio. Does anyone know when we might get these here?

Ummmmm...OK....please see all the other posts on this thread expressing exactly what I have criticized in my post. You'll find at least three saying they are switching to Satellite.

It IS about Austin/San Antonio radio because I live and work here too, just like all of you. I do concede that what is said on this thread is applicable to any market, but this is my home so I stated my opinion here.

Anyone is free to say whatever they want here, but come on people!! If San Antonio or Austin or any other radio sucks so bad that you are going to XM, then why do you waste time everyday continuing to criticize it? Just go to what you like. That's all I am saying. Why can't anybody ever just answer that question instead of responding with the implication that my post doesn't belong here? Doesn't it make sense that if you have switched to Sirius, you have already voted with your feet? If you have made that decision, what makes you think you have a right to continue slamming what you have left behind? That's like continuing to curse the poor reception on my old analog TV after I install the new 50 inch HD flatscreen. I will spend a few days talking about how much better the new one is, but after a while I'll have forgotten what analog ever was.

Yes, it's not as good as it needs to be around here. Yes it could be better. Yes there are several stations that are a waste of electricity. But doesn't anyone have any positive suggestions to make things better? Doesn't anyone on this board have anythign better to say than Clear Channel sucks and play more Dance?

That's all I am saying. I didnt mean to offend anyone with the tone of my first post. My sarcasm was intended to be humorous.

I listened for a while at radioshack on Sirius today, I liked the dance channels, they seem to be better than XM, I have XM on direct tv, but dont really care for it that much. Only thing I really dont like about Satellite radio is the portablility. I like to take it in my truck without drilling a hole, there are a lot of drawbacks on that for me before I really decide.
