Well, good luck to him but WNCI's music has SUCKED for awhile and I don't see it getting any better unless someone wants to come in and bring the big city sound to Columbus like it should be brought.

That's your OPINION... ratings/revenue would suggest otherwise.

jakej: It's great you're passionate. Now if you can take the concept to the next level and get it widely accepted, then you can claim success. But until then, you're simply passionate.

Hi, Del, and what's wrong with passionate?! That's a rare (actually nonexistent) word in the big-time business of big-time radio today, so gosh, I am very proud and humbled to accept your "passionate" designation; thank you so much. If I may, I would like to add that "Secrets" is already a success, in that my listeners are happy, my sponsor is happy, my station is happy, and I'm happy. Granted, the "width" of its acceptance is somewhat in dispute at the moment, what with the limited and convoluted Arbitron ratings information that we've received and all, but I guarantee that the show and WCRS are both headed in the right direction, and no other broadcasting outfit in this town can make that claim.

But good luck, sorry i don't live close enough to catch your show. How are you supposed to sing along to music you've never heard, and likely won't hear again? You're going to et a roomful of people dancing to the 12th cut of some album that sold 50 copies?

You don't have to live close enough, gr8 -- just go to where there's an internet hook-up and stream "Secrets" through www.wcrsfm.org at 8:00 Eastern time tonight, and then later if you want to have something to sing along to, I recommend going to church this Sunday and maybe even consider joining its choir. And concerning your other issue, well, the Everly Brothers, who will be one of my two featured artists this evening, definitely sold more than fifty copies of each of their albums, although I don't know if you can dance to them. So, um, yeah, maybe you should consider joining a dance troupe in your area, too. I'll tell you what, though -- a lot of kids who grew up reading my alternative music fanzine, The Offense, back during the '80s will be dancing to the show. And singing along.

Don't argue with him. I can tell you from experience. He never will learn. Unless he ever gets a job at a real radio station, tries his programming approach, watches it bomb and get fired in about 6 months time.

Er...but that's probably won't convince him, either. He'll blame management for not being willing to listen.

I wouldn't want a job at a "real" radio station. None of 'em could afford me anyways.

jakej: I don't get it. I paid a compliment. It's great that your passionate. Now if that passion can be turned into success, which is beyond lpfm and streaming and into the true commercial world on a self sustaining basis, then you'll be set and be able to thumb your nose at those who thumbed their noses at you.

So go out and do it!

Sorry for the misunderstanding, Del; I realize you were being nice, and I didn't acknowledge that as clearly as I could've. I guess I get compliments on this board so rarely that I don't know how to handle them, and I just automatically take a confrontational stance, at least initially, no matter what's written towards me. Thank you for being kind and for the encouragement. :)

This is why Columbus Ohio radio is terrible. The tools who listen to corporate radio and can't think for themselves.

I subscribe to paid podcasts to Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz. The only commercial talk radio I regulary listen to in Columbus Ohio are Phil Hendrie and Science Fantastic. For music are CD 101.1 and 106.7 HD2 FM. I did download the iheartradio app for the iPod touch and iPhone so I can listen to KTLK AM and KPOJ AM on my iPod Touch when at home.

Then CC proves on how not to run a radio station.

WCRS LPFM can be heard as far north as Powell Ohio, far south as Grove City, far east as Reynoldsburg. New main tower being installed in the fall. The translator tower at Marble Ciiff will be raised.

Of course that's my OPINION and let's face it, WNCI wins by default. Power 1075 has beat WNCI just months ago. WNCI wins by default. So does Power. If there was competition for either of them, they wouldn't be so hot at the top spot. WNCI and Power both don't have the top 40 market sound. In my OPINION, WNCI is a heritage CHR that could use some change because let's face it, if they leaned rhythmic, they'd still be #1

WNCI will never lean Rhythmic...They've always run their station very conservatively CHR. WNCI is run this way because they know they have zero competition in the format. I remember they started taking more risks when 105.7/107.1 was CHR in the early 90s...WNCI even stole their top-of-the-hour imaging(It sounded like a helicopter taking off). It even forced them to go back to CHR after that failed AC experiment in '93. WNCI is very complacent right now. Too bad someone didn't try to come in and compete with them, Kiss-FM or 92X style.

No, WNCI won't ever lean rhythmic, but like I said, they will sound crappy until a new PD steps in or until someone else comes into the market to challenge their conservative sound.

Not a single post on Mike McCoy leaving WNCI as of Friday?
Come on!

Dave Robbins, Neil Sharpe, Mike McCoy...who's the next WNCI PD?

Let's not leave Bill Richards out.
Richards was also a consultant for awhile in the 90s at WGTZ Z-93.

Posting quickly -- no time to study the whole thread at the moment. But I don't think I've seen John Dimick or Dan Bowen, both ex-NCIers, mentioned here

In spite of its growth in the past two decades, Columbus is still a relatively conservative city. The radio stations are merely reflecting that. I agree that the market's radio offerings are bland. Just saying....

For being a top 40 market, it's really nothing special.

Let me program the station ;) 175kw... of CHR... Well sorta :) I would flip it to Christian CHR ;) We'd still play Jordin Sparks and Miley Cyrus at least. :) *laughs* Just kidding. WNCI overall is a great station. Their not perfect but honestly everyone has their own tastes really and it's impossible to please everyone. I would love to see another station in this market flip to CHR (such as 99.7) and take on WNCI..but as everyone has said no one seems willing or has the backing to step up and do so.

People can say what they want about Columbus radio but realistically someone must be doing something right. People do listen.... and yes we could have other choices if the frequencies where avail but such is life.

Honestly Columbus has a pretty diverse radio dial compaired to some markets i've been too... We have Classical, Christian Rock (you don't find RadioU's format in many places) we have the great mix of World Music etc on WCBE, we have WCRS with their programming and music, we have spanish, we have classic hits (even if the signal is weaker), we have FM sports... We have CD101... there are a lot of choices in this market that others don't have.

That's a good point. And I think those formats should stay, but others could improve ;)

I may have erred in declaring WNKO to be off the Spring 09 Arbitron 12+ chart. I was basing that on radio-info's Columbus Ratings page, which gave it a dash and grouped it at the bottom along with quite a few other non-qualifiers, but the chart in today's Dispatch disagrees and lists the station at 1.0 for the past quarter.
Anyone who chooses to read Tim Feran's accompanying analysis on page D6 of all the numbers should allow his or her eyes to drift up a bit and to the right, as the "Today's Highlights" Radio block includes a listing for a rebroadcast of an earlier "Yesterday's Top Secrets" episode from last October that will air at 8:00 tonight on 'CRS. Many new "Secrets" shows have been listed here in the past, but none of the Monday night repeats has ever cracked this prestigious line-up until now. Luv ya, Susan! :-*

Columbus Ohio is no means have a diverse radio market.

Chicago, New York, LA are diverse. This is why I have a XM recevier.
