Are YOU still working?

These are troubled times in the Radio/TV/Newspaper/Billboard/Advertising business, not to mention everything else! There are several things you might like to share with your media colleague's... and naughtytalker is here to help you get them off your chest at no cost and anonymously of course.

A. Are you still working in the business?

B. Have you taken a pay cut or unpaid time-off?

C. How long have you continuously practiced your craft?

D. Is your employer on the verge of bankruptcy or declared it already?

E. Is there any prospect of the company hiring any time soon.

F. Do you expect to get the axe eventually?

*Please format your answers in english sentences.

Example: I'm still working without a pay cut or time off. I've been in radio for half my life but my employer is spiraling toward bankruptcy, so who knows how much longer this job will last.

Nope...Unfortunately I'm on the beach. Lost my last gig because they eliminated the Program Director position. Crazy huh...They now have part timers and a sales person doing the music and promotions. The station has fallen from top 5 to #13.

No, I have been sent to the beach and this time it looks permanent. I am a radio veteran of the
Tallahassee market, having been on-air from 1979 to 2004.

I took a 9-month sabbatical in 2001-2002 while the station attempted a new format, only to have it fail
in terms of listeners and revenue. I was called back in 2002 to fix the disaster, which took 2 years. In
2004, the operations manager position was eliminated.

My former employer will probably never hire anyone ever again. Station is leased to a group that is behind
on the payments and the licensee can't afford to take it back.

I see nothing locally on the horizon so I bought a new swimsuit and beach towel, joined the YMCA, and have
decided to just freelance whatever I can from home.

hell, I saw the writing on the wall years ago and got out and now am a lot more happy, and am actually in a field with a future

I got out of Radio about 15 years ago. Went into Television.
I'm doing primarily IT work - System Administration.

There is a group of broadcasters in Tampa whom I believe may soon be out of a job when their office shuts down. They know who thet are, and I wonder if they will speak up to let us know what they know about their fate. Surely some of them will have to stay in Tampa, but I think most of their jobs are slated to move to Miami.

The worst part of it all is that they have been living under the shadow of impending layoffs for about six months. They know the end is near, but they are unable to make plans for relocating, or to start with another employer because the exact date has not been given to them. Many are holding out for severance packages, but they don't even know if that's going to happen. Perhaps we will know more after July 1st.

Anybody there care to shed some light on the subject?

The above mentioned company is in the end throes of its lengthy death. It's a death brought upon a fraternity of inept middle managers who were more interested in company-paid outings and immediate commissions than investing time, effort and money into the company's goals. For over a decade, regional executives struggled to maintain clients by promising services that the upper echelon had no intending of ever endowing funds for the technology and staffing to deliver such promises.

In the end, a red-ridden checkbook each quarter had the same middle managers cutting from the bottom to make ends meet, while escaping blame for putting the company it the position it's in now.

The epilogue? The company fails to maintain the interest of talented workers and managers due to the ridiculous workload, fluctuating schedules, instability and low pay (which I read somewhere was just cut by five percent for most people)

Naughtytalker you work for Genesis?

If we assume that he works at all...sorry NT...couldn't resist...he does not work for Genesis.

Anyway, I'm going on a year out and could not be happier. Check my signature for some insight. :)

What are you doing these days, anyway, Mike?

Sports and news. Clark Howard when I can find him.

Oh, OK ... I thought you said you'd been out of the radio business for "going on a year" now, and I was curious to find out what you had parlayed your radio career into, but I guess I misunderstood.

Although I guess that does raise the question about what "doing Clark Howard" means.

Oopps... I'm now working for the non profit Special Operations Warrior Foundation. We provide financial support to wounded members of the Special Operations Command and College Scholarships to the children of special operators killed in combat or training operations. The website is www.specialops.org. I'm on facebook and you can follow us on Twitter at SOFWarriorFnd.

Thank you for asking! :)

There aren't many things I'd like to do other than radio, but this is one of them. Good work man.
