AREA 108/Coyote Country

For a while I thought Mix 94.1 and/or Xtreme 107.5 might have some competition with Area 108, but after hearing their jocks today I don't think they stand a chance. Their jocks sound old and out of touch. They don't sound like they'd fit in an exciting city such as Sin City. If worse comes to worse and Area 108 proves themselves a threat to Mix or Xtreme Rock, they could come together to squeeze Area 108 out of the market. Coyote had the same chance with KWNR. When Coyote first signed on, I thought that KWNR could have some fierce competition, but as of late I don't think they stand a chance against KWNR. What do you all think?

Already? They just had the ads looking for jocks on Allaccess and radioandrecords last week. Pretty quick with the hires. So who are these cats? Morning show? Midday? Afternoons? Nights?

Dont see anything listed on their webpage at www.area108.com

Larry Mac is middays, and they also hired Dennis Huff, but I don't know when he's on. I would assume he'd be on in the afternoon, though. Both of them from JJ's former station KUPD in Phoenix.

Re: AREA 108

Well I am listening right now via the internet and the music is great. However the jock lacks alot of energy. The format is not an AC type it is Alternative Rock. Get raunchy and take some phone calls, for god sake!! Don't back sell every song you played, right in the middle of a set. Always look forward not back. Only back sell the last song before spots. Other than that, the station is great.

You must not have paid much attention to KEDJ in Phoenix over the last year. When they went "neo" there, the numbers jumped through the roof. Back sell EVERY song, no matter where you take your break. Forward movement is the old mold, it's for top 40 and youth oriented formats. Music lovers, especially alternative music listeners who are very into the lifestyle, want to know about the music. They want to know who played the song they just heard. The only way to get that information is for the jock to give it to them. Radio is supposed to be about the music, not fart jokes. Remember when radio was good? When you could here GOOD music? That's what we need to start moving toward. Bring back the heyday of radio, when people listened for the music, not the jock.

People have always listened to radio for the music....its just the egotistical jocks who seem to know it all and happen to be on many stations tend to drive the listeners away in many instances. Ipods wouldn't be very popular at all (and might not even exist) if more talent realized that the music a station plays is much bigger reason for listeners to tune in than anything a jock does while on the air.

I would listen MORE if they were 100% Gold. From late 70's when Alternative and Punk was born, until 9 inch nails---closer---marilyn manson---beautiful people and they could beat Xtreme, which won't be tough with Howard gone.(Xtreme had balls when they signed on about 10 years ago) Their music was xtreme---no under the bridge by the red hot chili pepper crap. They did a fathers day promotion, and gave away Dr. Joel Kaplan penis pumps---for the dad who has nothing---and the phone callers they put on the air---bits were lean in content, and very enterainting at the same time---used to hang on their every word. They bore me now.
For Coyote, they got middays and afternoons right...Stunt Runt has been at KWNR since before the switch to country---he has a VERY loyal following, so it will take someone with a lot on the ball to un-seat him. Coyote can't beat KWNR, but billing will increase for Beasley. Middays and PM Drive have are their ONLY shot to do so.

Yeah! Like IPOD's and Dedicated Satellite Channels!

Except with commercials!

....Oh wait.

How about hiring intelligent, professional, talented, real on-air jocks that know what they're doing, and don't have to, (and never would) rely on fart jokes?

Too expensive?

How expensive is losing the entire f-ing industry?

AREA has started using the positioner "Independent Radio". They really have the aura of a college station. Personally, I like the music. But my "radio instinct" tells me it won't be very successful. They sort of have a AAA "we respect the music"/no-hype approach. AAA tends to work in highly educated metros (often college towns) with a low ethnic population. Las Vegas is almost the exact opposite of a place where AAA would thrive. We have mostly non-college educated service workers/blue collar workers as well as a large and growing international melting pot population. Add AREAS inferior signal and you have a recipe for a 1.5 share. Not that I wish it on them, any station that plays the Clash "Working for the Clampdown" is very cool in my book.

As for the country battle. My gut feeling is that KWNR is not vulnerable in middays and afternoons (if that's what you were trying to say). Those are the dayparts the "10 in a row or $10,000" contest has been running as well as other big contests. Plus, if you want to talk about heritage, Bob Bishop has been with KWNR for approx 15 years and has quite a large following himself. As for COYOTE, perhaps their goal isn't to beat KWNR, but simply to beat the billing of the former KJUL?

I don't know if that day ever really existed. For example in the early 1970s the "progressive" freeform rock stations that were "all about the music" had terrible ratings. It wasn't until latter in the decade when AORs tightened up their music and added high profile morning shows that the format started to take off.

They've already got a translator in the works. Should have something on the stratosphere within 6 months.

And if YOU think a station that plays Clampdown is cool, plenty of other people will to...

And I think you forget that Vegas isn't just a servic industry town. Yes, they are obviously dependent on their tourism, but tourism alone doesn't support one of the largest growing metro areas in the country. There's a major university in town (UNLV) and there are plenty of educated people in the market that would listen to a AAA-style alternative radio station.

Re: AREA 108

If you don't mind, Vegas_vet, may I ask you a few questions?

"People have always listened to radio for the music...."

What about KFI, WJR, KSL, KABC, KNX, KGO, KOA, WSB, KGO, KMOX, WFAN, KJR, WLW, KHOW, WLS.....?

"Its just the egotistical jocks who seem to know it all and
happen to be on many stations tend to drive the listeners
away in many instances."

Like who? I've been doing this for 32 years, and everyone I know (outside of morning drive) who put himself, or herself in front of the music got fired....every single one. So the "egotistical jocks" you're referring to are all morning guys, right?

BONUS QUESTION: Since any 'scoped aircheck I've done in my career was never longer than one hour's worth of station spots, are you saying that listeners hate jocks, and don't mind commercials?

"Ipods wouldn't be very popular at all (and might not even exist) if more talent realized that the music a station plays is much bigger reason for
listeners to tune in than anything a jock does while on the air."

Like.....Howard Stern? How about Melanie in the Morning? (She's beaten Howard many, many times) And Kim Kelley? (The best music jock in town) So, you're saying if all stations were JACK-FM people would stay away from IPODs? And if so, should radio stations have commercial files ready for people to download along with their other personal favorite songs?

Vegas_vet....Radio is about content. In the coming age of reality, (NOW) music just isn't going to get that done. XM, Sirius, CD's, IPOD's are all commercial-free music outlets. Commercial radio can not compete with that.

LAST QUESTION: So what content will radio provide, beginning right now, that isn't music, and isn't an "egotistical jock"?

(NOTE: The correct answer will make you a millionaire....good luck.)

Re: AREA 108 Supporters and bashers agree Area has AAA djs.

OK it seems as if the bashers think the jocks are kind of AAA ish. And the supporters say the jocks dont matter.

BTW - Who says jocks have to do fart jokes to entertain?

We shall see if the approach that worked in Phoenix works in Las Vegas. To me vegas seems like a party town (...) and even area 108s web page points towards the good time nightlife of vegas.. Even if, by the accounts here on both sides, say that the jocks dont have that sort of vegas glitter that people may be looking for in that city. I thought the whole rock scene was headed back towards that rockstar image? That the neutral AAA 90s rock dj thing was over.

>>>There's a major university in town (UNLV) and there are plenty of educated people in the market that would listen to a AAA-style alternative radio station.

Do students count in the ratings? Will those listeners count towards what the station will be charging in its billing? I may be wrong but I think the answer is no. And not to be captian obvious, but yes the city is very much service industry. Lots of construction too.

Agreed 100% that any alt station that plays more then the Clash 'Rock The Casbah' is cool. So lighten up. Its Vegas, have a good time. Throw a $50 in her G-String and put $50 on Black. Tip your bartender because your drinking free. Have a freaking party! Don't worry, we won't rat you out. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Just make sure I get to see the pictures!

Re: AREA 108 LAS VEGAS THE CITY OF ENTERTAINMENT

>When they went "neo" there...

Welcome to the Matrix.

Music lovers,
> especially alternative music listeners who are very into the
> lifestyle, want to know about the music.

Im going to respectfully disagree to an extent. While I may want to know who does the song, I could careless about the keyboard players name, birtday, former band, ect..I think 80% of those listening are in the same boat. They are radio listeners, not hardcore into the music the way djs are. Sure, tell me who the band is so I can go out and buy the cd...but Im not 14 and don't need all the 'super cool' dj info and little known facts about the band. That doesnt impress anyone over the age of 16. That whole "I know so much about the band because Im a cool dj" schtick burned out a few years ago. Dont get me wrong, information is good...But I want a little more in the way of entertainment from my dj then who the band is, little known info and where they are playing. (unless they are in town) Besides, that can be done on voice tracks.

Take a call. Do a bit. Tell a joke. I do agrre that you don't make a 20 min break about strippers and farts, but you should be able to do somthing in 30 seconds to entertain before a commercial break.

HELLO!!!! Its Vegas...the whole city is about entertainment!!!

Vegas Vet & Jon are BOTH RIGHT

You need to find the happy medium between what you are both saying. That is what radio listeners want. Good music. More then a 250 song CHR type playlist and compelling entertaing jocks that know when to talk and when to shut the hell up.

You both right...

Hug it out man!

C'Mon, big hug.

Re: fm ho slam fest 2005?

fmwhore said:

Here is a quote of yours from 11/17/05 A post entitled "Coyote Crud".

"Saying things like "She's old and AWFUL" are very hurtful to a person. Where are your morals?"

Here is the link...

http://www.radio-info.com/mods/board.php?Post=589537&Board=nevada

Then another look at your 20 posts has you slamming KLUC, K News, Star, Cat Thomas, Xtreme, Mike O neil, and Area 108. In only 20 posts? Huh?

If you know these guys, have previous experience, and you got beef with them...thats cool. Take it to the streets, knock yourself out.

But to have beef with just about everyone you have posted about? In 20 posts? You sound a bit disgruntled. Hell these Area 108 cats havent even been on the strip a week. Let them get settled in. Who knows, maybe the dj you heard IS tired because he just moved here and is sleeping on his new apt floor because the movers still havent gotten him his boxes of stuff. Maybe he is just throwing down some VTs till he can get some things around the studio set up the way he or she likes.

If you don't personally know all these people and are just taking anonymous pop shots at them, you might take some of your own advice here. Go with a little moral clarity. Maybe express your opinion without slamming individuls by calling them old, out of touch, lame or turds.

I would love to have conversation and be able to respect your opinion on the subject of Area 108, especially since you seem right on top of it, but right now I would be leery of doing that because your previous posts your just coming off like a mad insitgater.

Here is to hoping we just caught ya on a few off days...it happens to the best.

Re: Vegas Vet & Jon are BOTH RIGHT

Here it is broken down quite simply. Somewhere along the way, in the course of the radio business, somebody took radio way to seriously. Yes radio is a business. Is it a real business like a normal 9 to 5? The answer is NO!

Somebody took something as simple as playing music and tried to turn it into rocket science. We play music and talk over songs. To think there is anymore behind just that is pure ignorance. We are not making a difference in someone's life! We are not saving the world from terrorist! We are not improving the health of others! DJ's simply play a song, either they say something witty or they don't. That is it.

Along the way someone got a huge salary. So how do you justify a huge salary? You create a mirage around the work you do. You start to test songs, you have meetings that go nowhere, or worse yet you become a consultant. Last time I checked guys.... I didn't live in Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Diego, or any other market other than Vegas. What works in those markets does not work here. To think that something you did in your last market will work in the one you are in now, is just plain stupid.

Vegas is a city and like it or not a city based upon New York and LA. 95% of the population in this town hails from either NY or LA. So if you want to copy a style, copy from either one of those two. Being a DJ is a fun job, you get to be funny everytime you crack the mic. If you think that is unneccessary, then get out of the business. Listeners do tune in for the music but hearing Gold Digger for the 20th time of the day or Holiday, both Greenday and Madonna's, you need a DJ to intro the song and make it fun.

Yes IPOD's are here. Do I know anyone that owns one? Nope. People will always listen to radio. They will always flip the channel when a song they don't like is played and they will always flip the channel when commercials come on. Don't make this business sound harder than what it really is. Remember the roots, play a song, talk over it, be funny, and don't over analyze what the radio business really is. To think you have to test music or tell a jock how to talk is just a horrible ego trip.

Remember PD's, those who cannot do teach!

For eatayork:

"You must not have paid much attention to KEDJ in Phoenix over the last year."
No I did not I live in Vegas.

"When they went "neo" there, the numbers jumped through the roof."
Good for them, I couldn't be happier.

"Forward movement is the old mold, it's for top 40 and youth oriented formats."
I'm a young guy I love the format.

"Music lovers, especially alternative music listeners who are very into the lifestyle, want to know about the music."
I love alternative music. I don't want to know anything else other than where they are playing in town.

"They want to know who played the song they just heard. The only way to get that information is for the jock to give it to them."
No it's not. You can call the jock if your really care or you can get on the internet and type in the lyrics and find 100,000 websites dedicated to just that song.

"Radio is supposed to be about the music, not fart jokes."
Fart jokes are great every once and awhile.

"Remember when radio was good?"
Yup! It was the late 80's and early 90's.

"Bring back the heyday of radio, when people listened for the music, not the jock."
It wouldn't be that way if the FM dial wasn't riddled with so many jocks that have no talent. I like a jock to be funny, I also like him to be informative to an extent.... I also like a jock to get his or her point across in 30 seconds. That is a true talent!

Ohh and by the way eatayork you can eat something of mine. <--- See that is the kind of humor I'm talkin about.

John David Wells you are a great broadcaster.

Then why have the jock????? Oh yeah because you need someone semi-famous to make listeners come out to a remote. Don't knock what a jock does. It is a job that requires a skill that most people don't have, alot of those people tend to be in management. That skill is to talk infront of people.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by HEYYOU on 12/15/05 10:05 PM.</FONT></P>

Re: AREA 108 Supporters and bashers agree Area has AAA djs.

From what I hear from someone who knows the jocks on area108... these guys came from a station harder than extreme in Phoenix 98KUPD, that killed in the ratings and was very blue collar. I also hear they are sleeping on floors and hotels, and don't even have their home stuff here yet. I also here the studio isn't set for phone calls, but they will be getting up to speed soon. As far as AAA deleivery, they sound like guys trying to feel their way into a new format, a new city and mediocre at best equipment. I hear they are gonna have a good morning show, and looking for killer night talent still. What will be interesting is to hear what they sound like when a full staff is hired, and they have promotions, marketing etc. It still sounds like a station in building process still to me....
They sound like a classic alternative to me with new songs sprinkled in. I will be more interested in what their morning show sounds like than their middays..
these guys sound like they are coming into a station still trying to find its identity.
