Area radio vs TV people

First of all I should say the image media people present to the public, radio or tv, is obviously not always a reflection of true personalities. That said I notice turnto10.com has a space where Jim Taricani, Frank Carpano, and that ombudsman whose name escapes me blog and invite the public to respond. This form of feedback is invited by newspaper people too but I'm talking about more visible and audible people here.

I don't think it's any great revelation that radio people have a different mentality towards the public. In some cases I've seen actual disdain towards listeners or anyone who isn't an insider. Even outward appearances are sometimes too phony to really be believed. There are some Providence personalities who have gotten over themselves long ago, gotten a grip on their sense of importance outside the station, and really do appreciate listeners and can show it when it comes to interacting with them. I'm not talking about myspace.com here by the way since that's a social gathering of people who don't know each other but pretend they do. There are others though who deal with the public only because they have to but down deep look down at anyone whose never worked in radio. In some cases the looking down occurs in the station itself when it comes to the pecking order but that's another matter since some less important employees can be more difficult and obnoxious than the personalities themselves.

So what does everyone think? Is it the ilk of people that end up in radio? Are there less demands by management on radio people to try to act like normal human beings (which they are). Is it a general lack of appreciation within the industry that people can't strike back at that causes an almost surlyness when it comes to the public?

Also keep in mind I realize how someone from HJY interacts with listeners is obviously different than how someone at Lite Rock 105 would, but in general why the difference between the people in radio and TV? Try not to mention names of radio people you've worked with or dealt with outside of the radio environment that act like dicks.

No one will discuss this because everybody's thinking "you talkin bout me?"

When I hear stories about Radio people acting pretentious, it actually makes me sick to my stomach. There was a story here not to long ago about a former Radio personality purchasing clothes at the mall and acting like a bitch to the store employees. Of course in the process of acting like a bitch she felt the need to identify herself by name and station even though she had not worked there in months. Stories like this one make me crazy. When I was on the air 6 days a week with my own stupid show I never once even had the urge to be pretentious and not once did I ever feel the need to introduce myself by tagging my station call letters at the end of my name. Why the hell would I even want to do that unless I was trying to get people to give me some kind of special treatment. Simple answer is I WOULDN'T.

I got a map out of the United States once and put a Red circle around all the people who could hear my station. I then looked at that map and realized that I was a friggin Nobody. There was such a small pin sized red dot on that map, that it would have been the biggest joke in the world for me to even act like I was someone of great importance. I talked into a Microphone to almost Nobody!

If I worked as a PD of a Radio station I would give a map with a tiny red circle on it to every new employee, accompanied by a note that says..... Leave your Ego at home. Nobody outside this dot cares who you are and most people inside the dot don't care either!

Most street crews, interns, and board ops are genuinely cordial to any listener wearing a skirt
