Areas Best HD Stations

I am biased, obviously, but Y-Rock on XPN is the only one in the area that is fully staffed, from 9AM to Midnight. The jocks, while some are a little raw, are the most passionate and knowledgeable music people you'll listen to anywhere on the dial.

The music is what you would expect from a station that got yanked out of the commercial radio realm and proceeded to play whatever they felt like. There are the tracks that appeal to new music lovers, along with the old Sonic Session throwbacks to appeal to Y-100 fans.

As far as HD goes, when the rest of the stations in town are running clones of their HD-1 formats off of a computer stashed in the janitor's closet, Y-Rock on XPN can't be beat.

What's HD Radio?
Cmon Kyle you know what HD RADIO is but the question you might ask is what the hell is Menance 77.7 fm ??????

You still don't have many choices when it comes to buying HD units - most are expensive, ugly and not particularly easy to find. Big ugly boxes - not suitable for walking, jogging or listening while hanging around somewhere. They're mostly table radios or high end receivers.

Not to mention that you need to have a good signal to take advantage of the signals. I have never met anyone outside of this business who has an HD radio or who is particularly interested in buying one. A major contrast to the interest in things like HDTV or satellite radio (not that it's doing that well either). Wow, how those lame HD radio ads are a waste of airtime!! Have you listened to them? Talk about a disconnect with what's going on in the real world! "Those stations between the stations that EVERYONE is talking about!" Huh? Maybe 'everyone' is a clever way of saying 'no one'! ;D

So what's the audience for an HD radio station in a big market like Philadelphia? 3 listeners? 4? And, most are probably right here on this board too!

I'm declaring it now: Knocking HD Radio is hacky.

define "hacky" please

Hacky:

1) "What's HD Radio? I've never heard of it. Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!! I made a funny original joke!!!!"

2) "They should call it IBUZ!!!! Hahahahahahahaha!!!!!"

3) "If Clear Channel has anything to do with it, you know it's going to be bad!!!! DOWN with Big Radio!!!!!!"

Then I declare folks that defend HD Radio to be "hacky" D, so I guess we're even.

It's not even worth the discussion. We'll see how it plays out. I have a strong feeling though that I'll be right in the end.

Why people get all excited about buying a $100 radio, putting up an antenna ... and listening -- just to see if a station in "HD" gets out just 20 miles, if at all -- then gripes about the fidelity, artifacts, quality, lack of an HD-2 (or 3), then complains about it on a message board is beyond me.

The hobby, I thought, was in listening to RADIO, not how far out a poor technology goes. HD is radio for geeks.

Get an Internet radio and really listen to what's going on in the business so many love to hate.

Can I say:

4) "I bought one, and it's the single worst electronics purchase I've made in my entire life.

?

Or can I say what Oaktree said?

I don't yet have an HD set, but I've been in the homes of many friends and family members who do over the past two or three years. I hope to have one soon.

From what I've seen, the area's best HD stations are, in no particular order:

The one run by Channel 6 with non-stop Accu-Weather and Action News, the one on Channel 61 with the old-time public domain TV shows, and the one on Channel 12 with the documentaries.

Channel 17 used to run "The Tube" with music videos, but the service itself became defunct.

Hope that helps.

(I feel so "hacky" right now...)

Between this thread, the "new" Dance Station thread, and the WCOJ thread..... Boy, thank GOD for radio message boards ::)

What, are we supposed to sit around and agree with one another?

Excuse me, then. HD Radio! A fine purchase for music lovers and talk show enthusiasts of all ages!

Thhppppttt.

I realize this isn't the "HD" Radio Board, but Carnyfeet brings up a good point.

Dialog is what, I thought anyway, these forums were for.

But I do believe it is quite typical of the pro-"HD" Radio crowd, to attack anyone who dares to question iBiquity or the TRIPs in general-- as opposed to their views.

The thread started here was about "HD" Radio "stations". Folks' comments about the inanity of such programming availabilities are just as relevant as discussion of the channels themselves.

If we can't talk about this stuff with fellow aural communications enthusiasts, then with whom can we?

Obviously we can't talk with laypeople.

When they say they don't know what "HD" Radio is, they're not being sarcastic like we are.
