While noting that there's no real broadcasting implication to this thread with new developments, I will simply say that the Meruelo Group is alienating everyone in this town that matters.
His chances of getting an arena anywhere in the Phoenix area are cratering by the day. While noting that there's no real broadcasting implication to this thread with new developments, I will simply say that the Meruelo Group is alienating everyone in this town that matters.
The NHL likely takes possession of the intellectual property while canceling the franchise, bringing an end to its 52 year history (Utah is considered a new franchise, though stocked with the former Coyotes players.) The branding could be held for any future expansion team in Phoenix. What will happen now to the branding, name and IP?

Meruelo agreed to sell the team in late April (the sale closed on June 13) after securing an exclusive contractual right to reactivate the franchise within five years of the date of the agreement, and trigger an expansion draft if an arena was built. Reactivation would have required him to pay back the $1 billion that he received from the sale.
Coyotes are done: Coyotes Owner Meruelo Folding What’s Left of the NHL FranchiseDon't go away mad, Alex, just go away. Now. 🤮
As far as the Coyotes' branding and trademarks, either they would either cease to exist or would revert to league ownership, I would guess. This is deja vu Cleveland Browns all over again, so there is a legal precedent even though it's a different sport and league.
Either True North buys the pre-2011 history while the post-2011 to 2024 history goes to Utah owner Ryan Smith.Coyotes are done: Coyotes Owner Meruelo Folding What’s Left of the NHL Franchise
Still up in the air whether the Winnipeg portion of the team’s history will be returned to that city and Jets 2.0. Otherwise the end of the 52 year old franchise.
Scripps is keeping the broadcast rights locally.I just hope no local TV station is stupid enough to sign an affiliation contract with the Utah Hockey Club. If we have to get an out-of-town franchise on TV locally, I hope it's the Vegas Golden Knights. And if a new franchise is ever granted to Phoenix, I hope they come up with a new name.

Fans who reside in the Golden Knights’ television territory – which extends through Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and certain counties in California and Nebraska – can access every locally broadcast game on KnightTime+.
With the relocation of Utah Hockey Club, beginning in 2024-25 VGK games will no longer be available on KnightTime+ in the state of Utah.
This year, Arizona 58 will televise 100 NHL games featuring both the Las Vegas Golden Knights and the Utah Hockey Club, formerly the Arizona Coyotes.
It looks like Scripps is flipping the Idaho stations that carried Vegas last season to Utah this season. The website and TV listings for KIVI 6.2 and KSAW-LD 6.2 show Utah games this month rather than Vegas, so I wonder if Idaho is no longer Vegas territory.Arizona seems to be definitely included in the VGK TV territory.
The KnightTime+ FAQ reads,
It used to mention "certain counties in California and Arizona". Apparently this was also mentioned in a video interview (6:30).
It would not surprise me if some Utah games turn up, but in a secondary role to VGK, much as KUPX did with the Coyotes last year.
Knights games are expected to be aired in the Phoenix and Tucson areas in light of the Arizona Coyotes moving to Utah, Bubolz confirmed.
It’s expected to be done on a shared basis. The Colorado Avalanche and the now-official Utah Hockey Club still hold territorial rights where the Coyotes used to play.
Salt Lake City was one of the Knights’ TV territories before the Utah move. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed to the RJ that the Knights would receive additional territories as part of the switch.
