Arizona Coyotes moving to Salt Lake CIty

While noting that there's no real broadcasting implication to this thread with new developments, I will simply say that the Meruelo Group is alienating everyone in this town that matters.
His chances of getting an arena anywhere in the Phoenix area are cratering by the day.

I always called the Coyotes Wile E. Coyotes since they always fell off a cliff LOL. I think Utah should be called the Roadrunners then when the Coyotes Wile E. can face his pal Roadrunner LMAO. I thought for years the Coyotes shared with the Suns at the same arena wasn't that the case. I know they seem to have lost the arena somewhere in the PHX area and had to share with ASU why they moved out of PHX for Scottsdale seems like they lost the fanbase in that move.

Why would the NHL want to have a team in the ATL when it has failed twice in the ATL and both times the teams moved to Canada I think the Flames won a Stanley Cup while in the ATL but they never supported them. I could see Houston getting an NHL team I think the city would support the hockey team in H-Town.

Don't go away mad, Alex, just go away. Now.:poop:🤮

As far as the Coyotes' branding and trademarks, either they would either cease to exist or would revert to league ownership, I would guess. This is deja vu Cleveland Browns all over again, so there is a legal precedent even though it's a different sport and league.

What will happen now to the branding, name and IP?
The NHL likely takes possession of the intellectual property while canceling the franchise, bringing an end to its 52 year history (Utah is considered a new franchise, though stocked with the former Coyotes players.) The branding could be held for any future expansion team in Phoenix.

It sounds like he will take the money and run. This was a bad deal all the way around. According to the linked article, if he reactivated the team, he would have to pay back the $1 billion he got for the sale of the team. That's a crazy deal that he agreed to, and made no sense to reactivate.

Meruelo agreed to sell the team in late April (the sale closed on June 13) after securing an exclusive contractual right to reactivate the franchise within five years of the date of the agreement, and trigger an expansion draft if an arena was built. Reactivation would have required him to pay back the $1 billion that he received from the sale.

Coyotes are done: Coyotes Owner Meruelo Folding What’s Left of the NHL Franchise

Still up in the air whether the Winnipeg portion of the team’s history will be returned to that city and Jets 2.0. Otherwise the end of the 52 year old franchise.

Meruelo will be turning over the logos, rights to the Coyotes name, and other trademarks to the NHL. Once the league's Board of Governors meets on Thursday, the Arizona Coyotes will officially cease to exist.

I just hope no local TV station is stupid enough to sign an affiliation contract with the Utah Hockey Club. If we have to get an out-of-town franchise on TV locally, I hope it's the Vegas Golden Knights. And if a new franchise is ever granted to Phoenix, I hope they come up with a new name.

(EDIT: The link I posted is already in this thread.)

Scripps is keeping the broadcast rights locally.

It looks like indeed KASW will go with the Golden Knights. TV listings show they carry the Vegas pre-game show and Vegas-Utah pre-season game on the 27th. Scripps also looks to be clearing the Golden Knights on KWBA "Arizona 58" Tucson this season as well.

Arizona seems to be definitely included in the VGK TV territory.

The KnightTime+ FAQ reads,

Fans who reside in the Golden Knights’ television territory – which extends through Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and certain counties in California and Nebraska – can access every locally broadcast game on KnightTime+.

With the relocation of Utah Hockey Club, beginning in 2024-25 VGK games will no longer be available on KnightTime+ in the state of Utah.

It used to mention "certain counties in California and Arizona". Apparently this was also mentioned in a video interview (6:30).

It would not surprise me if some Utah games turn up, but in a secondary role to VGK, much as KUPX did with the Coyotes last year.

Went to Knighttime+ but the only thing there were some scores from 2021.

I would like to see some Utah games this coming year as I had some friends on that team.

It looks like Scripps is flipping the Idaho stations that carried Vegas last season to Utah this season. The website and TV listings for KIVI 6.2 and KSAW-LD 6.2 show Utah games this month rather than Vegas, so I wonder if Idaho is no longer Vegas territory.

What's wild and unexpected is that we might also??? be Colorado Avalanche territory, not that there'd actually be a way to watch the Avs here, per this June 20 Las Vegas Review-Journal article:

Knights games are expected to be aired in the Phoenix and Tucson areas in light of the Arizona Coyotes moving to Utah, Bubolz confirmed.

It’s expected to be done on a shared basis. The Colorado Avalanche and the now-official Utah Hockey Club still hold territorial rights where the Coyotes used to play.

Salt Lake City was one of the Knights’ TV territories before the Utah move. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed to the RJ that the Knights would receive additional territories as part of the switch.

Looks like Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Hockey Club Broadcast Schedules are now on Arizona61 website. Schedules airing between KASW Arizona61 and KNXV AntennaTV 15.2, even when both teams don't have games on the same night. So I guess neither team is primary to Arizona61.
