Arizona TV Station Update - August 2007

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

New stations

  • LPDTV station K39IT-D Prescott (KSAZ License) has applied for a license to cover construction. It is the digital companion channel to K04AI Prescott, and a translator of KSAZ-TV 10 Phoenix. Usually a station will begin program test at or around the same time they apply for their license, although it is not confirmed that they are actually broadcasting yet. It is the first LP DTV station in Arizona to apply for a license.
  • LPDTV station K57KG-D St. George UT (University of Utah) has been granted a license to cover construction. It is the digital companion channel to K32FQ St. George, and is a translator of KUEN 9 Ogden UT.
  • LPDTV station K44JI-D Washington UT (University of Utah) has been granted a license to cover construction. It is the digital companion channel to K47AK Washington, and is a translator of KUED 7 Salt Lake City UT.

New programming

  • KYUM-LP 2 Yuma (Centro Cristiano Vida Abundante) is reported to have new programming from Tele Vida Abundante, a Spanish-language channel produced by the station's new owners.

Callsign changes

  • KWTF-LP 51 Flagstaff and companion station KWTF-LD 21 (KM Communications) have changed their call letters to KBFG-LP and KBFG-LD, respectively. You may provide your own joke about the old calls.

Special Temporary Authority granted

  • KAZT-CA 27 Phoenix (The Londen Group) applied for and has been granted Special Temporary Authorization to construct an LPDTV station on channel 27 with greater ERP than what would replicate their current analog facilities. KUTP's DTV station broadcasts on channel 26 and has recently increased power to the maximum allowable 1000 kW, causing adjacent channel interference to some KAZT viewers. KAZT calculated that to replicate current analog coverage in digital, they would need to broadcast at 0.938 kW ERP in the main beam, but having a much more powerful station on the adjacent channel would cause interference to nearly all KAZT viewers. However, increasing power in the main beam to the maximum allowed 15 kW for an LPDTV station would nearly eliminate the interference from KAZT, but the FCC has had a freeze in place since August 3, 2004 on LPTV stations looking to increase coverage area. The FCC does make exceptions to the freeze on a case-by-case basis and has granted KAZT such an exception.

Construction permits granted

  • TBN translator K53IJ Prescott (Gerald Benevides) has been granted permission to move their broadcast site to Towers Mountain near Crown King. The ERP reduction and antenna pattern change should adequately protect K53GF Phoenix.
  • K30ES Globe (Globe LPTV) has been granted permission to reduce the max ERP of the new facilities being built from 32 kW to 9.9 kW. This will eliminate the need for coordination from the Mexican government.
  • K57JO Laughlin NV (9th Island Broadcasting) has been granted permission to change from a low-power station to a translator station, rebroadcasting KMCC 34 Laughlin NV (Cranston II/Equity). The station will also reduce ERP from 10 kW to 0.82 kW and move the transmitter site several hundred yards. The original station covered the entire Bullhead City/Laughlin area and could be received as far away as 15 miles north of Lake Havasu City; the new station will basically only cover the casino area of Laughlin and across the river in Bullhead City.

Construction permit grants rescinded

  • The FCC giveth; the FCC taketh away. After rescinding KBFY-LP's CP to move from Yuma to Henderson NV last month, this month, the FCC has rescinded the CP of KAFL-LP Flagstaff (Una Vez Mas) to move from channel 20 to channel 45. Apparently, someone filed opposition to the move, most likely one of the applicants for a station on channel 46 in Flagstaff. In addition, when they granted KAFL the CP to move to channel 45, they replaced the new callsign with K45KL, and have now gone back to the old K20IQ callsign. I'm thinking it's a mistake by the FCC, <sarcasm>unless they also rescinded the callsign change.</sarcasm>

Silent stations

  • K59BP Camp Verde (Camp Verde TV Club) went silent on August 14. Cause is unknown, but is thought to either be due to a power transformer failure or from lightning. Camp Verde TV Club has filed a silent STA with the FCC.

Transactions

  • The sale of K57JO and K63HJ from Mojave Broadcasting to 9th Island Broadcasting has been consummated. Both stations are construction permits assigned to Lauglin NV.

Applications filed but not yet approved

  • K57JO Laughlin NV (9th Island Broadcasting) has applied for a license to cover its new facilities.

License renewals

  • The FCC has renewed the license of KSWT 13 Yuma (Pappas Telecasting).

Applications dismissed

  • The FCC has dismissed the displacement application for K61HA Bullhead City (TBN) to construct LPDTV facilities on channel 51. TBN had already been granted displacement from channel 61 and had built analog facilities on channel 51, K51IO, so a displacement application was not needed to build digital facilities.
  • The FCC has dismissed an application from Dean M. Mosely to build facilities on channel 20 in Yuma.
  • The FCC has dismissed an application from Charles Townsend III to build facilities on channel 28 in Needles CA.

Now if KWTF had become KBFD, then there'd be two jokes to be provided!

Too late - there already is a KBFD in Honolulu.

Correction:

The Tele Vida Abundante programming for KYUM-LP 2 Yuma is not new; it is a resumption of previous programming. The previous programming was identified as TV A, from its on-screen bug. TV A is Tele Vida Abundante.
