Programming changes

  • The new Justice Network launches January 20 and has an agreement from Gannett to carry it at launch on their stations. If so, it is unclear whether it will air on KPNX 12.x Mesa, whether it would replace weather programming on 12.2, or if it would be added to 12.3, or if it would be added to 12.2, moving the weather programming to channel 12.3.
  • KGUN-TV 9.x Tucson (Journal Broadcast Corporation) has dropped Live Well Network from channel 9.3, following the shutdown of the network. In its place, KGUN has added ThisTV programming to channel 9.3. The programming change is also found on its northwest metro translator K16EO-D 9.x.
  • K18JL-D Phoenix (Mako Communications LLC) has replaced the color bars on channel 25.1 with a no-audio broadcast of GNTV Latino.
  • KTVP-LD 22.x Phoenix (Mako Communications LLC) has dropped the Rev'n Network from channel 22.4.
  • KPHE-LD 44.x (16) Phoenix (Lotus TV of Phoenix LLC) briefly replaced Retro TV programming on channel 44.2 with the Rev'n network, then switched it back to Retro TV. It then added a fifth subchannel, 44.5, designated SmartAZ. Currently a black screen, it is likely to become the new home of Smart Lifestyle TV, which has now been replaced on channel 44.3 by Rev'n. The new subchannel shows in the station's terrestrial virtual channel table but does not appear in the program association table.
  • Good News Broadcasting Network, Inc., is claiming to be on the air in Yuma on channel 39.
  • TeleRomántica has disappeared from KFPB-LD 50.6 (Globe LPTV, LLC), having been replaced by a blank screen.
  • Scripps has renewed its agreement with ABC, keeping the network on KNXV-TV 15.x through December 2019. Link: http://escrippsnews.scrippsnet.com/node/3194
  • KGRQ-LD 19.x (29) Gila River Indian Co (Gila River Telecommunications, Inc.) has begun broadcasting from its Stotonic antenna site. So far, one channel is available, airing PBS-style public affairs programming that one might expect to see from a government-run TV station.
  • K21MD-D 19.x Gila River Indian Co (Gila River Telecommunications, Inc.) has begun broadcasting from its Blackwater antenna site, identifying on PSIP as KGRQ-LD but as channel 19.1.
  • KTNV 13.x Las Vegas NV (Journal Broadcast Corporation) has dropped Live Well Network from channel 13.3, following the shutdown of the network. The station is rumored to be adding Heroes & Icons programming on channel 13.3 January 12.

  • KMCC 34.x (32) Laughlin NV (Cranston Acquisition LLC) went dark temporarily but reappeared with MundoFox on channel 34.1 and The Cool TV on channels 34.2 and 34.3. The station was on and off all month, ending the month in the "off" position.
  • KEEN-CD 17.x Las Vegas NV (LeSEA Broadcasting Corporation) replaced "Car2ns" cartoons programming on channel 17.7 with all-Christmas programming, "XMAS", for the holidays, before returning to "Car2ns" programming.
  • KHMP-LD 18.x Las Vegas NV (Hilltop Church) went dark due to equipment failure on December 5, but returned to air on December 19 with three subchannels, compared to four before.
  • KNBX-CD 31.x (14) Las Vegas NV (Mako Communications LLC) has dropped HOT TV from channel 31.4.
  • KGNG-LD 47.x (48) Las Vegas NV (King Kong Broadcasting, Inc.) has replaced PBJ with MiCasa on channel 47.2 and replaced Aviva, first with infomercials, then with PBJ, on channel 47.7.
  • KLSV-LD 50.x Las Vegas NV (Biltmore Broadcasting Las Vegas, Inc.) has restored channel 50.2, first simulcasting JTV programming from channel 50.1, then switching to infomercials with label KSLV-RV, which is the label used previously when channel 50.2 was infomercials featuring Joan Rivers Beauty. Rabbit Ears identifies it as Revenue Frontier network. The station has also added channel 50.3, labeled as KLSV-CS, which Rabbit Ears identifies as CornerStore TV.
  • KSL-TV 5.x (38) Salt Lake City UT (Bonneville International Corporation) has added ThisTV to channel 5.3. The addition appears on the following translators, available in Arizona:

  • A petition to deny has been filed against the renewal applications of Hispanic Christian Community Networks stations KJPO-LD 49.x Parker, KRPO-LD 21.x Quartzsite and KZVE-LP 30 Littlefield. The petitioner claims that HCCN's sole owner, Antonio Cesar Guel, who knowingly certified that he is an American citizen, is actually not a citizen, and is therefore ineligible to own a broadcast station. The FCC rescinded its renewal of HCCN's KJKC-LP Tonopah NV, based on the petition; could the Arizona stations' applications be denied and the stations licenses be revoked? HCCN's three Arizona stations are phantoms; not one has ever broadcast a signal.
  • The Palo Verde TV Club has been granted renewal of its licenses for the following stations:
    • K24DA Blythe CA
    • K26FS Blythe CA

The FCC has suspended expiration dates for new CPs due to uncertainty with the auction, shutdown of analog, and transfer of TV frequencies to wireless, resulting in the possibility that LPTV stations could get squeezed out altogether. Thanks to Trip Ericson for the link.

Over in Las Vegas NV:
KNBX 31.4 HOT TV was on air at the end of the month. The station was on and off so often during the month that it was difficult to keep track.
Also, KHMP-LD 18.x experienced a problem with its signal during December, but when it returned to air, only AMG programming on channel 18.1 was available. Channels 18.2, 18.3 and 18.4 continue to be silent. Thanks to Rick Dodds for the correction.

I believe the callsigns KGRF and KGRY will be used for the other two Gila River transmitters. A Gila River news article says the following:

"On the west end, tune to channel 19 for KGRF out of Maricopa Village; in the east, it will be on channel 21, KGRY broadcast from Blackwater; and everywhere in the middle of the reservation, visit channel 29, KGRQ, from Stotonic." It appears they must be using 19.x as the universal RF given that 21.x is in use by KPAZ and 29.x

I just set up a paper clip antenna for the first time and I do not get KGRQ (I should be in their max power signal contour, which actually throws some good power out to the Southeast Valley, and even on the edge of their 2.7 kW STA contour; K21MD-D, which is becoming KGRY, should be receivable in Coolidge. K19JV-D on the other hand has a bunch of different listed contours, one of which would make it receivable in downtown Phoenix. And then there's K19JT-D, which appears to not be ready yet, which would broadcast from a location across I-10 from Wild Horse Pass Casino at Gila River Telecommunications headquarters.

The FCC has approved the transfer of Lin of Colorado, LLC from Lin Media to Media General. KREZ-TV Durango CO and its translators, including K30GL Many Farms AZ.

Wasn't KREZ supposed to be sold to a Native American group? From Wikipedia:

LIN was in the process of selling KREZ to Native American Broadcasting, LLC. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the sale in late May 2011 but Native American Broadcasting has not yet closed on the purchase as of August 2012.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KRQE#Satellite_stations

The Wikipedia article was correct: Lin attempted to sell the station, and the FCC approved of the sale, but it never closed. That's not uncommon.

The Indian community did in fact reserve KGRY-LD for the Blackwater site, and KGRF-LD for the Maricopa Village site; the FCC shows the call sign change as occurring on December 18, but did not publish the new call signs on their website until this week. They had been showing as K21MD-D and K19JV-D, respectively.

I was able to receive both KGRQ-LD and KGRY-LD on the evening of January 6 from an upslope area where 3rd St. turns into Frye Rd. in the Foothills. I could not receive either station on the desert floor at 40th St. and Pecos Rd., nor can I receive either station from the attic antenna at my home in west Chandler, about 3 miles from the planned Wildhorse Pass broadcast site. RabbitEars shows me in an area where I should be able to receive KGRQ with an indoor antenna, but those plots are approximations. KGRQ is not licensed yet and may not yet be operating at full power. Or I might get the station if I were to re-orient the antenna. The San Tan Mountains block me from KGRY, but it gets through to that upslope area from which I observed the station.

The Justice Network is finally putting out some affiliation information. It will air on KPNX channel 12.2 in Mesa/Phoenix and on KMSB channel 11.3 in Tucson. No plans yet for Yuma, Las Vegas or Salt Lake City. It is still unclear whether KPNX's weather sub will disappear altogether, or move to channel 12.3.

In other news, KTVW-DT 33.x has begun carrying KFPH-CD in HD on channel 33.2, giving the station Univision in HD on 33.1, Unimás in HD on 33.2 and Grit in SD on 33.3. Meanwhile, KFPH-CD 35.x is now carrying KTVW-DT in HD on channel 35.2, giving the station Unimás in HD on 35.1, Univision in HD on 35.2, getTV in SD on 35.3 and Escape in SD on 35.4. The station is also supposed to pick up Bounce TV sometime this year. Not sure how well the twin HD signals are handling fútbol action on Unimás.

I believe that KGRQ has a full 15 kW spec but is running 2.7 kW on STA because they're waiting on Mexican approval. The IFT is pretty busy, I might add, and I get the sense that American coordination applications are not high on their radar right now.

Justice Channel debuted today on KPNX channel 12.3, while channel 12.2 continues to air weather.

Also, K18JL-D 25.x now has sound and is airing Amazing Facts TV (AFTV) under the Good News TV banner. In the bottom left is the station ID "K18JL-D Phoenix Channel 25".

New station on in Yuma:

K33MD-D 33.x Yuma (Broadcast Group Ltd./BGM Licensee) is on the air as of today. It is repeating XHILA-46 (66.x) Mexicali and its four subchannels.* Ch. 33; TL 32-40-25 N, 114-20-13 W (Telegraph Pass); 15 kW ERP (ND); HAAT 349 m.

*Broadcast Group Ltd. is owned by members of the Cabada family, the same family that on the Mexican side owns XHILA and XHIJ Cd. Juárez. This group also owns stations at Calexico, CA (K42KZ-D, which replaces analog K07ZF and will have the same content as K33MD) and El Paso, Texas (K26KJ, digital flash-cut pending).

This video (in Spanish) is actually from one of XHIJ's newscasts and shows a lot of the facility.
