Arizona TV Station Update - February 2007

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

New license

  • KINC 15 Las Vegas NV (Entravision) has been granted a license to cover its digital facilities on UHF channel 16. Their signal can be seen in parts of Arizona.

New programming

  • K23HB Flagstaff (Prism Broadcasting Network) is on the air, broadcasting under Program Test Authority. At present, the station is transmitting an ID slate. Prism Broadcasting programs many of their stations with brokered services, such as HSN and Jewelry TV, so it is likely that this station will air brokered programming as well.
  • KDOS-LP 50 Globe (Telefutura Partnership) is broadcasting under Program Test Authority. It is a translator of Univision station KTVW-TV 33 Phoenix.

Returned to air

  • K29EC Blythe CA (Palo Verde Television Club) is back on the air, again retransmitting KPHO-TV 5 Phoenix.

New construction permit

  • KWWB-LP 45 Mesquite NV (Entravision) has been granted a construction permit to move their transmitter location and modify their broadcast pattern. The new transmitter will be located not far from the old one, to the west of St. George UT, but whereas the old broadcast pattern was a narrow lobe actually pointing away from its city of license, Mesquite NV, the new broadcast pattern will be more omnidirectional, which should provide a stronger signal to Mesquite, as well as to nearby Littlefield, Arizona.

Applications not yet granted

  • K23HB Flagstaff (Gannett) has applied for a license to cover their new analog operations.
  • KDOS-LP 50 Globe (Telefutura Partnership) has applied for a license to cover their new analog station.
  • K54FW Tucson (Trinity Broadcasting Network) has applied for immediate displacement relief to move their analog facilities to channel 7. Their current frequency was purchased by Aloha Wireless, who has notified TBN that they would commence service soon, forcing K54FW to relocate or go silent. I'm a little skeptical - in September 2005, Aloha Wireless gave notice to K53GF in Phoenix that they would have to vacate their channel within 90 days, due to interference they would cause to channel 54 there. K53GF hastily applied for and was given permission to move to channel 38, but is still broadcasting on channel 53.

Applications dismissed

  • The FCC has dismissed an application for Three Angels Broadcasting Network (3ABN) to build a digital station on UHF channel 36 that would have been a companion channel to Las Vegas NV station K43FO, whose signal can be seen in parts of Arizona.
  • The FCC has dismissed an application for Bonneville to build a digital station on UHF channel 62 that would have been a companion channel to Santa Clara UT station K35FS, a translator of KSL-TV 5 Salt Lake City UT, and whose signal can be seen in parts of Arizona.

License renewal granted

  • KDTP-CA 48 Phoenix (Daystar Television Network) has been granted a license renewal.

Expiring construction permits

  • The construction permit for K16GB Kingman (Smoke and Mirrors) is set to expire on March 15th. Given that the company's other television property, KBBA-LP 10 Lake Havasu City, only airs a live view from the transmitter looking toward the city, I question if this station will even get built.
  • The permit for KBHD-LP 49 Bullhead City (Daystar Television Network) will expire on March 22nd. Daystar went through the trouble of putting call letters on this station; I'm reasonably sure that this station will go on the air, if it hasn't already since my last visit to the area in late November 2006.
  • KAZT-TV translator K55GG Kingman (The Londen Group) has a construction permit to move to UHF channel 20 under calls K20ID. That permit is set to expire on April 14th. No word on whether or not the station is being built.

Other notes

  • A stop in Williams on a recent trip has confirmed that station K41JE (KTVK Inc.) is not yet on the air, even though KASW lists the channel as one of their translators. The analog station's original construction permit is good until April 2009.
  • Several newly licensed stations do not air any programming, not even an ID slate. Included are stations K25HU Kingman (Gerald Benavides), K53IJ Prescott (Gerald Benavides), K20HS Flagstaff (Turner Enterprises), KWKM-LP 10 Show Low (KM Communications) and KWSJ-LP 12 Snowflake (KM Communications).
  • KAZT-TV translator K23BY Scottsdale (The Londen Group) makes one wonder why its owners even bother to keep the station on. Although intended to fill in areas not served by KAZT-CA 27 Phoenix and K55DB, its over-the-air signal is so bad, it is not watchable.
  • There are two new Mexican stations whose signal can be received clearly in San Luis, Arizona. Both air programming from OnceTV, which is station XEIPN 11 Mexico City DF. One station is just below XHRCS 50 San Luis Rio Colorado SO and above XHLRT 44 San Luis Rio Colorado SO, while the other is just below XHILA 66 Mexicali BN and above KAJB 54 Calipatria CA. I have no idea where these stations originate from or what their actual channel assignments are. The SCT website (Mexican version of the FCC) doesn't list the stations yet.

K23HB (it's owned by Prism, not Gannett BTW - you list it as both) is licensed for 5 watts ERP! Who'll be able to see it unless they manage to get cable carriage? Link: K23HB's Engineering Data entry in the CDBS Database

As far as K23BY's concerned, it looks like they're designed strictly to fill the areas of Paradise Valley that can't gets Chs. 27 or 55 due to being blocked by Camelback Mountain & Piestewa Peak. Their pattern is to the southwest only, to the total exclusion of other directions. They don't really serve much of the city of Scottsdale at all.

Whoops. Thanks for the catch; K23HB is owned by Prism, not Gannett.

You're also right about their signal. I was near Butler and I-40 when I picked it up, and then, just barely. My portable TV didn't lock on; I had to go find it. Without cable coverage, I don't see how this station can fly, and I'm not sure what they can offer that cable doesn't already, especially if they're planning to go with a shopping service.

Funny how signals work though. K33CG is a TBN station licensed to Sierra Vista with 1 whole watt ERP. The transmitter is located on Mule Mtn. just outside of Bisbee, yet the signal somehow reaches Sierra Vista - faint, but definitely present. I was able to get some of the Flagstaff LPTV stations in Winslow and even in Holbrook. OTOH, KFPH-CA 35 in Phoenix has a strong signal, but I can't get them 5 miles away with an unobstructed view of the tower.
