Arizona TV Station Update - June 2020

New Licenses


  • K25PA-D 13.x (25) Santa Clara UT (Scripps Broadcasting Holdings LLC) has been granted a license to cover its displacement construction permit to move to an in-core channel. When licensed, its new call sign will be K25PA-D. Technical specifications: Ch 25; TL 37° 9' 19" N, 113° 53' 0" W (West Mountain Peak); ERP 0.3 kW directional; HAAT 1109 m.

Programming Changes


  • KASW 61.x (27) Phoenix (Scripps Broadcasting Holdings) has distributed its ATSC 1.0 signals to KNXV-TV and KSAZ-TV as follows:
    • 61.1 (CW) is being hosted by KNXV-TV.
    • 61.2 (HSN), 61.3 (Grit) and 61.4 (Court TV Mystery) are being hosted by KSAZ-TV, with the Grit and Court TV Mystery subchannels now displaying as channels 61.5 and 61.6, respectively, to avoid confusion with the minor channel numbers for H & I and Light TV already in use on RF channel 10.
  • K35OU-D 21.x Tucson (Ventana Television Inc.) has added QVC3 to its lineup on channel 21.5.
  • KGNG 26.x Las Vegas NV (King Kong Broadcasting Inc.) has dropped QVC2 from channel 26.7, replacing it with Mi Tele.

Call Sign Changes


  • K43CC-D 13.x (25) Santa Clara UT (Scripps Broadcasting Holdings LLC) has changed its call sign to K25PA-D following licensing of its in-core displacement facilities.

Construction Permits and Special Temporary Authorization (STA) Requests Granted


  • KTTU 18.x (19) Tucson (KTTU-TV Inc.) requested and has been granted an STA to operate at reduced power for up to six months following failure of a critical part. Replacement has been delayed due to evacuations caused by the Bighorn fire. Installation is tentatively scheduled for July 6 and should take three to four weeks. Full containment of the fire has not yet been reached, so there is a good chance that the work will be delayed.

Construction Permits and STA Requests Requested


  • KASW 61.x (27) Phoenix (Scripps Broadcasting Holdings LLC) has requested a modification to its Distributed Televison System (DTS) construction permit. The station intends to drop the San Tan Valley and Gila Bend sites and go with a two-site DTS with locations at South Mountain and Shaw Butte.
  • KDPH-LD 48.x (46) Phoenix (Community Television Educators Inc.) has requested an extension of its January 2020 silence STA. The station plans to remain silent until its displacement facilities are built on RF channel 13.

Canceled, Denied, Dismissed, Expired or Expiring


  • The FCC has dismissed a 2012 construction permit modification request for KRPO-LD 21.x Quartzsite (Hispanic Christian Community Network Inc.) to move its transmitter from its licensed location about 8 miles south of Salome to a location near the junction of Interstate 10 and Salome Highway.
  • The FCC has dismissed a 2019 STA extension request from KDOS-LD 29.x Globe. The extension was unnecessary due to KDOS completing its displacement facilities as specified in its construction permit.

Rule Making Requested


  • KPNX 12.x Mesa (Multimedia Holdings Corporation) has filed a Request for Rule Making, petitioning the FCC to change the allocation for Mesa AZ from RF channel 12 to RF channel 18. KPNX cites difficulties that viewers are having receiving a VHF signal and the fact that they are the only big four network to not have a UHF signal, putting their NBC programming at a competitive disadvantage.

NextGen TV


  • KASW 61.x (27) Phoenix (Scripps Broadcasting Holdings LLC) has presumably converted its station to the NextGen (ATSC 3.0) broadcast standard, hosting the signal of KSAZ-TV as well as airing its own programming.
  • KVCW 33.x (29) Las Vegas NV (KUPN Licensee LLC) has filed a Legal STA outlining its NextGen conversion plans. Of note are its plans to not broadcast its secondary subchannels in NextGen format.
 
If the folks at KPNX were smart, they would move K06AE, the Mingus Mtn translator of satellite, KNAZ
to Rf 12 and move a new translator back to Mt. Francis in Prescott.
 
If Central States Communications were to apply for RF channel 12, they would have priority as a displaced station and I'm not sure Tegna would have a valid reason for changing frequencies anyway.
 
I have been made aware of an oversight: KNXV-TV is no longer hosting KFPH's Court TV Mystery subchannel, 35.4. The subchannel is now being hosted by KPHO-TV.
 
It looks like Ch. 14/38 has added an E/I subchannel (14.4) where the shopping channel used to be. However, it looks like it consists of "programming" that's at least 10 years old.

Over the weekend, they aired the same Dec. 2019 episode (???) of Nashville Insider back-to-back, a 30-minute ET-type show that spotlights current country music. Not sure what the channel is now called.

Not surprisingly, commercials air predominantly every 10 minutes. From all I've seen, airing commercials is what Herrera does best. Frankly, he isn't qualified to do anything else when it comes to this profession.

This "channel" won't last more than 60 days, if that. Just like his recent list of programming failures over the last year.

Quinones and Herrera should call it a day. They're embarrassing themselves, and the local broadcast community. Shameful! :rolleyes:....:(

Actually, that E/I subchannel on 38.4 has turned out to be AMG TV, and it seems to be a good quality picture. That's a solid win for viewers. I'll give the guys kudos for that one.

It looks like they will be putting something on 38.2 called ACE TV, which my research tells me should be American Classic Entertainment, a network with little distribution, mostly cable, and one OTA affiliate in Denver. It's not on air yet, but when it is, it looks like it could be another win for viewers.

Would you say this is another example of maximum profit for minimum effort? It sure seems that way to me, because Q & H are notorious for that. :rolleyes:

Of course it is, but who doesn't work that way? Maximum profit = best return on investment. Minimum effort = least cost (overhead) that cuts into your profits. That's capitalism, in a nutshell.

What it isn't, is a video of squirrels. In other words, what sets this apart from the previous subchannels is that it holds some value to the viewer. A babysitter channel for your dogs doesn't quite do that.

I've heard some good things about AMG TV, so I'm happy to have it. ACE TV is an unknown to me.

One thing is certain with both channels: neither of them have secure websites. That's just sad... I'll pass on viewing them.

In Q & H's case, minimum effort has nothing to do with the "least cost". To the contrary, it has everything to do with lack of productivity and ambition.

In my opinion, that's why there's no more IZ Videos. They let a great idea go to crap, and they've never recovered.


All that said, I do agree though that the replacement channels are an "improvement" (I use that word very loosely) from a 24-hour squirrel, weed, and used car lot channel. But I digress. :rolleyes:
